Explore Nottingham
Start off your day at Nottingham Castle. Gaze at the panoramic views across the city then explore the contents of the museums, including the array of art galleries. The gardens surrounding the castle are also well-worth an amble around.
Nottingham is in fact a city built upon caves. This does mean that there are plenty of them to discover. You could have arranged a tour whilst you are at the castle, but in the centre of the city there are also a variety of sandstone caves to explore. Head to the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre to start off your tour.
Embark on the Robin Hood Trail. This starts in Nottingham, but to complete it, you are advised to use your hire car due to the distances involved. Nottingham Castle will be your first port of call, then the Galleries of Justice Museum followed by Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem a pub where many legendary tales have been told!
Out and About in Nottinghamshire
Spend a day enjoying the wondrous countryside at Newstead Abbey. Once home to Lord Byron, you can meander around the house itself to see a Victorian residence, but the icing on the cake is the myriad of lakes, waterfalls and gardens sprinkled around the grounds.
For more cave-related fun, hire a car and head to Creswell Crags. This limestone gorge is littered with caves, but that’s not all. View the Ice Age rock art located here then amble around the Creswell area which is home to many trails and walks.
You can’t miss out on a visit to Sherwood Forest. The Dukeries is an area which is especially beautiful. Here you will find Clumber House at Clumber Park, Worksop Manor, Welbeck Abbey and Thoresby Hall. The historic village of Edwinstowe is also supposedly where Robin Hood married Maid Marian at St Mary’s Church.
For a cheap day out, Wollaton Hall and Deer Park offers a plethora of things to see and do. There is a Natural History Museum and Yard Gallery located here, alongside the house itself. This Grade I listed building is truly stunning and a day spent here will certainly not be wasted.
