Amble around 90 acres of parkland and view the spectacular Tredegar House. The house itself has seen many different residents over the centuries and has many stories to tell. Boasting stables and gardens, if this is not enough, take a stroll and admire the acres of parkland.
The iconic Transporter Bridge located in Newport is a must-see. It dominates the skyline of the city, so you will find it hard to miss! Once you have had your fill here, look for the numerous artworks and sculptures dotted around.
Found just on the outskirts of Newport, the Wetlands Reserve offers fantastic views across the Severn Estuary. This area is a haven for bird life and every season provides a new treat for visitors. If you happen to be here in spring, you may even hear a cuckoo calling!
Drive Around South Wales
A short journey away by car, Caerleon is a hotbed of Roman history. Explore the ruins of a Roman fortress and baths. There are other historical sites that you can visit too, including Runston Chapel and Blaenavon Ironworks.
If you enjoy a round or two of golf, you’ll be spoilt for choice in the Newport area. With about 30 courses to choose from, why not head to Celtic Manor which provides three of them?
Travel to the Fourteen Locks Canal Visitor Centre to discover the local history. If you enjoy walking, then this is also a great spot to start from. There are a number of circular walks to enjoy which gives you time to soak up the scenery. Finish your day at the tea rooms and sample a local cake.
The Brecon Beacons National Park is also within a reasonable driving distance to Newport. Explore the limestone caves that lie beneath at the Showcaves Centre. Walk along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal or hire a narrowboat and enjoy a peaceful afternoon. Llanthony Valley is also particularly stunning and is home to some 12th Century ruins amongst plenty more.
