In the Town
Maidstone is a picturesque town that has plenty to offer. The River Medway bisects the town and provides it with boating activities. If the weather is nice, be sure to take a river cruise or hire a boat and explore the Millennium River Park. The river also provides various areas for relaxing and some idyllic picnic spots.
If you enjoy being outside then make sure you visit Mote Park. This 180 hectare park is a great way to spend a day and has lots to offer. You can play ‘pitch and putt’ golf, spend some time watching the boating lake and also take a trip on the miniature railway. The park is also home to Mote House, a former stately home, which is not open to visitors but is still a beautiful feature.
Also within the town is the Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art Gallery, which has regular different events and displays. Under an hour’s drive from Maidstone is Canterbury. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its cathedral is the oldest in the UK. The stunning building is just one of the attractions in this charming city. You can visit Canterbury Castle and The Roman Museum to see some other great local historical exhibitions. The Museum of Canterbury is also a good place to visit if you want to view some interesting displays.
Just a 10 minute drive north of Maidstone is the Kent Wildlife Trust Tyland Barn Visitor Centre. The nature reserve is a perfect day trip for families. There are loads of things to do including pond dipping, mini-beast hunting and practical geology. It is a great adventure which is well worth setting aside a day for.
You can also take the short drive to Leeds Castle. The castle has lots on offer including a maze, golf course and fantastic restaurant. It is also worth a trip just to see the castle, which is surrounded by a large moat and is open to visitors. If you are willing to drive a bit further then be sure to head to the coast to enjoy the iconic white cliffs and beautiful sandy beaches.
