Explore Canico
Once you have had your fill of swimming and snorkelling from the beach in Canico, be sure to visit the Garajau Marine Reserve nearby where greater diving opportunities can be sourced.
Head to the main square where you will see the church to one side and a large building to the other. There are some wonderful botanical gardens tucked away here, so make sure you visit them during your stay.
Other Places to Enjoy
Neighbouring Machico is well worth a trip in your hire car. The beach will no doubt be your first port of call and is perfect for those who wish to explore further by diving. Travel to Pico do Facho and gaze in awe at the fantastic panoramas that you will be presented with.
Madeira is known for being rather mountainous, so taking on the challenge of Pico Ruivo and Pico Do Arieiro is a must. In order to reach the peak, you will have to embark on this walk by foot, but the reward comes in the form of the stunning views at the top.
Plan a trip to the west of the island where you can visit a selection of picturesque villages including Ponta Do Sol, Prazeres and Ponta Do Pargo, each with their own delights to offer.
For something a little different, drive to the northern half of the island to Santana. Characterised by the triangular houses with large thatched roofs, once you have seen these, you can explore the Laurissilva Forest.
