Touch down in Samos Airport and journey to the island capital, also known as Vathy, and beyond when you book a hire car.
Soak up all that’s on offer in Samos. For some Grecian culture visit the Byzantine museum or the fascinating Archaeological museum located in Vathy. These museums are considered two of the best in all of the Greek Islands and exhibit some interesting finds.
Just 10km along the north coast road from Vathy is the island’s most popular beach. At Livadaki, tropical azure waters lap against soft sand in a long sheltered cove. The water is warm and stays shallow for a long way out making it perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Relax in the shade of a palm-frond umbrella or if you’re feeling energetic take advantage of the free kayaking on offer.
Travel to the nearby Pythagorion on the south of the island. There is plenty to do here including a visit to the monastery, castle and of course the bustling port itself holds its own charm. Travellers are captivated by its beaches, its charming Aegean architecture, its vibrancy and its beautiful nightspots.
Modern Pythagoreio also hides great treasures for lovers of history and archaeology, since it is also a very ancient settlement of great archaeological significance.
Head to the west of the island and visit the lovely town of Karlovasi. Admire the many old magnificent mansions to view here. Take the time to stop for a leisurely lunch at one of the pavement cafes and watch the world go by. If you’re in the area, a visit to the Karlovassi waterfalls is a must. Locate the wooden steps which lead you to clearing offering breathtaking panoramic views.
If it’s a taste of Samos’ natural beauty you’re after, be sure to make the trip to Glyfada Lake. Wildlife enthusiasts will delight in the array of bird watching on offer. Make time to watch the Dalmatian pelicans and pink flamingos ascend into the sky at dusk as they continue their migration. Remember to bring your camera to capture the spectacular sight.
