Angra de Heroismo
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city of Angra de Heroismo is steeped in history and one of the most picturesque spots in the Azores. With its networks of whitewashed streets punctuated by colourful chapels and wonderful ocean views, Terceira is a fascinating place to explore.
Once a prosperous trading centre, time has stood still in this old harbour town. Climb Monte Brasil and walk the old walls of the imposing fort of São João Baptista. It has stood guard over the city for 400 years and although it is no longer used for military purposes, it offers wonderful views across Angra bay.
If you’re looking for a sandy beach and water sports head to Praia de Vitoria. Here you can choose from surfing, water-skiing, jet skiing, and kayaking amongst other things. With a lively modern harbour and host of bars and restaurants it should come as no surprise that this town is a popular tourist hotspot.

Home to deep caves, lava tubes, and lush green meadows surrounded by towering volcanic mountains, Terceira is perfect for outdoor adventures. The 90m-deep volcanic chimney at Algar do Carvão, the island’s core, offers an entrance to another world. Descend the staircase hewn into the rock and begin your exploration of this subterranean wonder. Home to a breathtaking array of colourful stalagmites and stalactites formed by an eruption 200 years ago, Algar do Carvão is Terceira’s most popular geological attraction.
For more volcanic rock based fun head to Biscoitos to swim in the famous lava-rockpools. Sheltered from the crashing Atlantic these warm blue pools are perfect for relaxing in and snorkelling! Whilst in Biscoitos you could also visit one of the local vineyards and tour the wine museum that documents Terceira’s wine-growing history.
