Travellers to certain parts of the globe may find themselves in need of applying for a visa. Not all countries require them but where you do, requirements are quite strict. Failure to produce a valid visa may result in you being denied entry to that country. Our guide covers some of the main things you should expect when applying for travel visas.

What is a visa?

A visa, often a stamp or sticker in your passport, or a separate electronic or printed document, is proof that you’ve been given permission to enter a certain country. A visa defines;

  • How long you can stay for
  • The territory you can enter within that country
  • The dates you can enter
  • The number of permitted visits allowed
  • Prohibitions on the right to work

A visa can typically work in two ways:
1 – Its validity defines when you can enter the destination country and allows you to stay there for up to the maximum time permitted.
2 – The visa limits the duration of days you can spend in the destination country within its period of validity.

Certain nationalities must apply for an exit visa to be able to leave their home country.

Why do I need a visa?

The main aims of a visa are to reduce illegal immigration and to reduce security risks. The advance application for a visa allows the destination country to run certain checks on you to ensure that you don’t pose a threat. These include, but aren’t limited to;

  • Your financial situation
  • Reason for application
  • Details of previous visits

Some countries don’t require visas from certain nationalities due to reciprocal treaty agreements.

How do I apply for a visa?

In special extreme circumstances, a visa can be granted on arrival. You should always make an advance application through the country’s embassy or consulate. If you find it easier, you can use a private visa service to apply for one on your behalf.

Be aware! Private visa services will charge you administration fees so it’s worthwhile comparing the costs of obtaining your visa directly from the embassy or via private service.

You may have to submit additional documentation to support your application. This can include, but not be limited to, proof that;

  • The applicant can support themselves in the host country
  • The host exists and has sufficient room for the applicant
  • The applicant has the required insurance
  • The health status of the applicant is as expected

How much does a visa cost?

This varies between countries and on the type of visa you’re applying for (visiting or working). Check with the immigration office of the country you’re visiting for fees. If you’re using a private visa service to apply for you, they will charge you additional fees for the service.

How does a visa work?

On arrival at your destination country that requires a visa, border crossing authorities will check that you have a suitable valid visa. Despite having a valid visa, this can be revoked at any time pending violation of its conditions and you may be subject to additional security and health checks on arrival within the country. The border crossing authorities have the final decision on allowing someone into the country.
