Once upon a time, September marked the end of the school summer holidays and thus, the end of summer but not anymore! Not only are prices cheaper compared to July and August, the crowds are thinner and the sun still shines bright and hot…surely the perfect blend for your summer holiday? The only question that remains is where to go on holiday in September? I’ve rounded up 5 super destinations that you should definitely consider if you’re planning a late summer escape…

Italian Islands

Where to go on holiday in September
Both Sicily and Sardinia will make an excellent holiday destination in September.

The likes of Sicily and Sardinia are heavenly throughout most of the year but particularly so during the month of September. As with most destinations, the crowds have thinned by this time allowing you a more authentic experience. That said the sun and sea is still lovely and warm so chill out and rejuvenate on the great beaches. Moreover, with the flurry of food festivals which cram the calendar during this time, a trip in September is the perfect excuse to sample the many delectable Italian dishes, many of which are local specialities. If you had a bit more sight-seeing in mind, the daily temperatures of around 22°C make for pleasant days unearthing the cities which speckle the countryside on either island.

Cyprus

If soaring temperatures are where your interests lay, Cyprus could well be the ideal choice for you. Even during September the mercury records highs of around 30°C and sometimes higher! In fact, because of the Mediterranean climate, these temperatures are practically guaranteed between June and September. Both south and north Cyprus are appealing although the south is of course much better known, as it is home to the likes of Paphos and Larnaca. Indulge on the perfect beaches blessed with clear, sparkling water or learn about days gone by at the rich offering of archaeological sites which dapple the horizon. Just a few hours from the UK, Cyprus is an ideal choice for a classic sun, sand and surf holiday. Gather more inspiration and read our other blogs about Cyprus.

Tunisia

Tunisia may not top the typical holiday lists but it doesn’t make it any less enjoyable as a travel destination, particularly at this time of year. Temperatures will have cooled considerably from those experienced in July and August but you will still enjoy the likes of 25°C or higher, especially during the first half of the month. Miles of blissfully empty coastline will welcome you with open arms and the cultural differences across the country will ensure there is never a dull moment when exploring the towns and cities. The capital Tunis, has more than enough to offer just on its own and you won’t know where to begin. Earn yourself a glowing tan and soak up the culture here like a sponge!

Balearic Islands

Similarly to the Canary Islands, the Balearics are known as a year round sun spot with the islands boasting 8 hours of sunshine each day in September! The busy resorts will be beginning to empty out by this time, although if you want pure relaxation then head to a rural villa in Menorca or Majorca and hire a car to get around during your holiday here. With a variety of things to see and do, this is an ideal choice for a holiday away from home this September.

Spain

It’s not really a surprise that sunny, versatile Spain makes for a fantastic destination throughout many months of the year. To get the best of the temperatures during September though, opt for northern or southern Spain rather than the middle stretches so that you can enjoy the very best of the sunshine. Barcelona is a great choice combining bustling city vibe with its great urban beach while the contemporary San Sebastian is an often overlooked gem. Inland, the city of Madrid has plenty on offer while further south, Seville welcomes daily temperatures of 30°C plus, perfect for a spot of sunbathing next to your villa pool.

So, with endless choices available, consider a taking a holiday in September and enjoy the many benefits! You might even consider October or November when you read our reasons to take a winter holiday.
