Following the eruption of the Grimsvötn volcano, the ash cloud has now reached airspace over Scotland and northern parts of the UK.
Nats, who provide air traffic control services to the UK, have issued an update warning that volcanic ash is expected to affect services between 13.00hrs and 19.00hrs UK time on 24th May at the following airports;
Londonderry, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Prestwick, Newcastle, Carlisle, Durham Tees Valley and Cumbernauld.
Whilst UK airports remain open, any passengers who are travelling from or to anywhere in Scotland or the North of England today are advised to contact their airline to check the status of their flight before travelling to their departure airport.
At present, strong winds are affecting many parts of the UK and the Met Office has said that consequently the path of the ash cloud is difficult to follow. Nevertheless, early predictions indicate that the remainder of the UK could be covered by the end of today which may cause further delays and cancellations. Disruption is not expected to be on the same scale as the eruption of Mt Eyjafjallajokull last year however.
