Unusual Things to See and Do in Spain.

Famed for delicious food, unrelenting sun, afternoon naps and miles of coastline, I’ll forgive you if you think you have Spain all figured out. Like every country, Spain also has its fair share of the weird and wonderful, from the likes of pick and mix frozen vegetables to meat in a cone. Here are some of the more unusual things to see and do in Spain that I’ve come across… what’s the weirdest thing you’ve experienced in a foreign country?

Disaster Café

If you travel to Catalonia on your next trip, dine somewhere a little different and visit the Disaster Café in the town of Lloret de Mar. That said, a visit should be reserved for those who don’t scare easy as your meal here will be interrupted by a very life like simulation of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, with absolutely no warning. You are unlikely to remember this place for the food but it will give you something to write on the back of a postcard at any rate… Would you add it to your bucket list or is it one to miss?

Siega Verde & Coa Valley Prehistoric Rock Art Sites

This is more of a unique attraction to add to your itinerary; it’s certainly a far cry from the resorts of Benidorm and bustling cities of Malaga or Alicante. Siega Verde lays in western Spain close to the border whilst Coa Valley is actually in Portugal just over the border, but both places are full of Prehistoric Rock Art and are both protected by UNESCO World Heritage Status. Consider a trip here and truly take a step back in time.

El Camino Del Rey

These days, health and safety is paramount; not so much in Spain, especially at El Caminito Del Rey which translates to the King’s Little Pathway, but you may prefer to call it the most dangerous walkway in the world, owing to it’s terrible state of disrepair. It was once used by hydroelectric power plant workers but now the “path”, which clings desperately to the side of a gorge in El Chorro, is 350ft above the river below. If you decide to tackle it (and survive I hasten to add!) it will make a unique story to tell for years to come and is certainly a little more unusual than an afternoon of sun bathing. Strange Festivals

Spain is certainly no stranger to weird and wonderful festivals across the country. There are a number that everyone has heard of, namely featuring tomatoes, bulls and jumping over babies but the oddities don’t stop there. Give your trip to Spain an unusual twist and visit one of the lesser known celebrations… for starters take the Snail Festival, or Alpec Festival as it is better known which is hosted in the town of Lleida. Take 12 tons of snails and 200,000 visitors and create all sorts of foods involving them for punters to taste. The Goat Throwing Festival, The Battle of Dead Rats and Festival of the Near Death Experience are some other examples of extremely strange events that fill Spanish calendars.
