For cycling fans, nothing beats waiting for the Tour de France peloton to fly by. The 2016 route takes in mountains, the coast and vineyards, making it a road trip like no other in Europe.
We’ve compiled some tips and advice to help you plan this once in a lifetime journey through France.

What time of year should I go?
The Tour de France is held from 2nd to 24th July in 2016. You can either set off a few days before or after to soak up the atmosphere. Alternatively, the shoulder seasons, April – June or September to November are always good weather wise, (and you’ll avoid the crowds.)
Tour de France – Entire Route or a Section?
Whilst driving round the whole of France is an attractive prospect, time may be against you! We’ve selected our favourite stages of the Tour de France, to help you decide which ones to try.
Stage planning & the route
If you’re going to be doing this in July, contact the local tourist office in advance. Find out about road closures to make your journey hassle-free.
Stage 1: Mont Saint Michel – Utah Beach
The race starts in Mont St Michel and meanders through Normandy to Utah Beach. Visit the abbey of Mont St Michel. Afterwards head to Utah Beach and the museum. Pay a visit to the American Cemetery & Memorial above Omaha Beach at Colleville-sur-mer.
Best for: Those who want to combine a relaxed holiday with driving a portion of the route.
Stage 11: Carcassonne – Montpellier
Explore the walled city of Carcassonne. Stop for lunch at the excellent Le Parc Franck Putelat on Chemin des Anglais before following the route towards Montpellier. It’s a beautiful town so try and spend a few days here exploring the coast and sightseeing.
Stage 19: Sallanches – Megève
Enjoy this pretty route through alpine valleys, located in the heart of the Alps. Explore these skiing towns when the snow has melted and the breath-taking scenery has been exposed.
Stage 20: Megève – Morzine
Stage 20 offers stunning scenery and exciting mountain roads. Pack a picnic and stop off in an Alpine meadow for lunch and a walk.
