With most of the UK currently covered in inches of snow, it’s safe to say that winter is definitely upon us, albeit a bit earlier than usual! Most of us are well aware of the disruption that winter weather can cause to our daily commute, therefore preparation is essential. Read below for some simple but helpful tips to ensure you stay safe on the roads with our top 5 tips for driving during winter!

  • Leave extra time for your journey; just an extra 10 minutes will ensure your car windscreen can thoroughly defrost, improving the windscreen visibility from mist. This will save you from putting your foot down on potentially icy roads on your way to work!
  • Fill your car with some supplies during the winter months such as a shovel, a blanket or rug, extra clothes, water, and some sugary snacks such as chocolate, which will increase energy levels! These items could really come in handy in the event of a breakdown, or if the snow stifles your journey!
  • Always keep your mobile phone charged up! Your phone will almost always be on low battery when you need it the most! If you’re unable to ensure it’s charged during the winter, it may be worth investing in an in-car charger.
  • When the weather starts to turn, remember the Antifreeze! A bottle won’t cost you much, and this purchase could help you substantially, but it is easily forgotten!
  • Lastly, remember that your safety is paramount to punctuality! Try to stick to major routes and remember to drive steadily and accordingly to suit the conditions, always leaving extra space between you and the car ahead.

Whilst this advice may seem fairly obvious, it’s easy to get wrapped up in your busy daily routine, especially in the build-up to Christmas, and it can be easy to forget to adjust your driving style to suit the conditions. If you have any other tips, feel free to comment below.
