At this time of year, France makes for a fantastic holiday destination. It’s an easy and cheap journey from the UK and the variety of cities and landscapes means that whether you choose northern, central or southern France, you will experience a special holiday. The city of Grenoble, in south-east France, surrounded by the French Alps makes for a particularly pleasing visit, particularly if you are searching for a snowy winter escape! Known for its arts and culture, attractive old town and lively squares, you are certain to have a great break and here are 5 things to do in Grenoble.

Bastille Hill Cable Car, Grenoble, France

Take a ride on the Bastille Hill Cable Car

Named after Bastille Fortress which was built at the crest, Bastille Hill has long been an integral part of the city. Whilst the fortress is no longer in use, the hill is still one of the most popular attractions of Grenoble. This is thanks in large part to the cable car which makes it accessible to all, and for less than 10 Euros per person. If you are feeling energetic, tackle the hill on foot, which will take around 40 minutes, with the fantastic views as your reward. Take a wander around the fortress and museum before you head back down.

Natural History Museum

Grenoble is a fantastic city for anyone with any interest in culture. There are a great number of museums to visit and enjoy. If you have limited time, then I would suggest visiting the Natural History Museum. Whilst it isn’t a unique concept, they tend to appeal to all ages and always manage to gain your interest. Overlooking the Botanical Gardens, you will find an aquarium within as well as many more interesting exhibitions and fascinating artifacts from around the world.

Go skiing

With mountains at every turn, skiing is a popular attraction in the winter months. With fresh powder plentiful, the resorts here cater to skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. The closest, such as Alpe d’Huez or Chamrousse are just 45 minutes away with a hire car from Grenoble Airport. If you fancy a slightly different activity, try snowshoeing which can be enjoyed as a full or half day excursion. If you are visiting in the summer, you won’t find a better environment for hiking and walking.

Go Shopping at Place Grenette

Any city break will include a small amount of shopping. The best place to enjoy a spot in Grenoble is at Place Grenette. A busy, thriving central square, it is jampacked with people, French cafés and bars so it exudes a great atmosphere. The surrounding streets are where the best shopping can be enjoyed however with small, unique boutiques and independent shops as well as a great number of chain stores. Track down some wonderful souvenirs or perhaps buy a gift or two for yourself!

Monteynard Lake, France

Visit Monteynard Lake

Take a day trip out of the city and spent a day visiting the stunning Monteynard Lake, brimming with unbelievable turquoise water. Although the lake is artificial, it is unarguably a great place to enjoy some time in the great outdoors. Test your bravery and take a walk over the two dramatic Himalayan Gateways, enjoy a ride on the La Mure tourist train or perhaps a relaxing boat trip. If you prefer something a bit more active, why not try windsurfing which proves popular here thanks to the ideal conditions.

This area of France is a joy to visit whether you are planning a winter skiing holiday or summer break. With plenty on offer for all ages to enjoy, it’s sure to be a memorable trip!
