Italy is simply the epitome of a holiday destination. It boasts a prolific history, impressive art, a fascinating culture and tasty food, impressive sights and beautiful countryside. Rome
No matter how long you spend in Rome, it would never seem like long enough. Its greatest treasures are widely known, but simply knowing about them isn’t enough. You have to stand in the presence of the magnificent Colosseum, flip a coin into the Trevi Fountain and gaze upon the beauty of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City to really appreciate them. Whilst you will brush shoulders with plenty of other tourists, it’s worth it to uncover treasures of this world famous city.
Venice
Aside from the vast influx of tourists, architecturally, Venice remains much the same as it was when it was built. Famous for its stunning canals which wind their way mysteriously through the city, Venice is unique and romantic. The ultimate attraction is of course a gondola ride through the waterways. Art plays a major role in the appeal of Venice. There are many art galleries to visit and enjoy in addition to excellent restaurants, St Mark’s Basilica, St Mark’s Square and many other sights. With neighbouring cities Treviso and Trieste in close proximity, Venice is a beautiful base from which to explore this portion of Italy.
Naples
The official home of pizza, a visit to Naples is essential for anyone who considers themselves a foodie. It’s not all about the cuisine though; Naples is one of the country’s most vibrant cities. It has a rich offering of interesting attractions and architecturally impressive buildings. Found on the south coast, it is by far the most important city in the south of the country. Having been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status as a result of the concentration of historical treasures within the city limits. It’s just a stone’s throw, from the beautiful Amalfi Coast and intriguing city of Pompeii. Naples is one of the best cities in Italy to visit.
Milan
Milan is best associated with its fashion scene. As big a city as it is, there is plenty more on offer than just retail therapy. Much of Milan was destroyed during the Second World War. It is now regarded as the most modern of Italy’s cities. It plays host to a thriving art and cultural scene with some of the country’s best-known masterpieces on offer. These include the stunning Duomo Cathedral and world renowned painting, Leonardo Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”. A trip to Milan allows you to see a different side of Italy.
Verona
Synonymous with Shakespeare’s tale Romeo and Juliet, Verona is widely regarded as a city of love. Found in the north-east portion of Italy, it attracts many visitors who combine their city stay with a visit to nearby Lake Garda. Uncover the amphitheatres, castles and churches at your own pace. Following this, venture off to explore the surrounding countryside.
