What’s happened in August that you need to know about? Let’s run through our top picks of the news in travel.
- Ryanair introduced new rules about luggage on their planes.
From November, the budget airline announced, passengers will have to pay an additional £6 if they want to bring an 10kg bag on board. This will affect luggage like pull-along suitcases and bigger bags. You’ll still be ok to bring on one “small personal bag” as long as it fits under the seat in front. Full Info
Our take: It’s not great to see another cost when “extras” are already handily priced. Saying that, in the long run this may reduce boarding time but we’ll see how it pans out.
- Ryanair says over 10,000 people switched to new luggage policy.
Ryanair also claimed that over 10,000 people had made the switch to their new £8 per 10kg checked bag policy. This happened within 3 days of the change going live on their site. This change goes hand in hand with the change we wrote about above, except that priority passengers will still be able to carry on the second, larger bag for free. Full Info
Our take: Some impressive figures being touted from Ryanair here and it’s hard to argue with a cheaper cost and more choice. Maybe you only need 10kg not 25 so it makes sense to give the consumer a choice to pay less for only what they need.
- Stanstead shows off pretty images of new terminal.
Stanstead has released some stunning new images of it’s planned £130 million new arrivals terminal, due to open in 2020. The CGI images are from the architects who have been commissioned to to design the new terminal. Full Info
Our take: Looks impressive and it should for £130 million. Come 2020 though it’ll be interesting to see how it’s received by those using it regularly.
- Luton airport is named UK’s worst, again.
In damning news for the Bedfordshire based airport, it has been named the UK’s worst airport. For the 3rd year in a row. The survey was based on 521 Luton passengers responding to the survey and is based on everything from queues, to baggage drop and even how clean the toilets are. Full Info
Our take: This doesn’t sound too good for Luton airport. The one saving grace for Luton here is that their score was based on quite a low number of passengers compared to all the 15 million passengers who went through Luton in 2017.
