With over one thousand idyllic islands at your disposal, a holiday in the Greek Islands can be anything you want it to be. The inviting sea, warming summer temperatures and traditional Greek villages are the perfect blend for a relaxing break.

Starting off with the basics

As one of the larger islands and with its very own volcano, Santorini often proves a popular choice. Here you will find a spattering of traditional stark white villages speckling the hillsides, wonderful sunsets and lovely beaches to enjoy the hot Greek sun. With few purpose built tourist attractions, your time on the island will mostly revolve around the simple pleasures. Sample the historical sights, iconic blue topped churches and the handful of museums, gorging in traditional Greek taverns. Explore the village centres and of course try swimming or sunbathing.

Drink in the wonderful scenery

The scenery on the island is particularly beautiful. Both walking and hiking are great ways to experience the natural beauty. The walk along the caldera of the volcano from Fira to Oia offers stunning views. Tackle it either in the morning or evening to avoid the hot midday sun. The same goes for the climb to uncover ancient Thira and the monastery nearby. Again, the views are more than worth it.

Explore the seas

Once you have had your fill having explored every inch of stunning Santorini and with the lure of the crystal clear sea ever present, why not set sail. Spend some time on the water and perhaps even visit one of the neighbouring islands. Escape from fellow holidaymakers for a day or two and relish the breeze in your hair, the sun on your back and the view of the sea at every turn. It’s arguably one of the best ways to compliment your holiday here and will leave you thoroughly relaxed. Relish in the freedom to uncover secret, deserted beaches that you don’t have to share. You can swim from the boat and don your snorkelling gear for great marine life viewing.

There are plenty of options to choose from too – boat excursions of all lengths and itineraries depart from Santorini Port on a regular basis, on all different kinds of boats. Let someone else take control and sail around Santorini itself, take a sunset cruise, keep yourself dry and enjoy a glass bottomed boat adventure. Visit the volcano island of Nea Kameni and relax in the hot springs.

On the other hand if you are experienced, you can perhaps arrange a yacht charter and captain yourself or if you don’t have a license you can just hire a small boat for an hour or two through a company like Explorer1.

Sailing in Santorini allows you to experience this stunning island from a different point of view, uncover some hidden secrets and unwind. Do you ever go out on a boat on holiday?

Apparently so! I haven’t counted them myself though 😉 I think there are around 140 inhabited islands, but the rest are tiny and uninhabited which dramatically increase the total.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out the blog! 🙂
