There are so many cities in Spain that are perfect for a short break away. Some of the smaller cities are often overlooked by the big names of Barcelona and Madrid. For something a bit different, we’ve put together a suggested itinerary for a short break in the city of Jerez de la Frontera. We hope that this will spark your imagination and lead you to consider a city holiday there.

2 days in Jerez de la Frontera

Spend your first day exploring the sights of Jerez on foot. Start the day with a tasty late breakfast and then head off to get a true sense of Spain with a visit to the Museo Taurino; a museum dedicated to the truly Spanish tradition of bullfighting.

This should be followed with a visit to Alcazar; a Muslim palace built in the 12th Century with a well-preserved mosque and baths on site too. As the oldest building in Jerez,
it’s an interesting place from which to get an insight into the history here. End your first day in Jerez with a tipple at a sherry distillery called a Bodega. Popular ones include Harvey’s, Domecq and Gonzalez Byass so take your pick!

Wake up bright and early on your second day here to get the most out of your remaining time. Jerez Cathedral is a great place to visit first thing, even if it is not usually your cup of tea. Built in the 17th Century, the architecture is a mix of Gothic, Baroque and Neo-classicist styles with a separate bell tower and the building is certainly impressive.

From here, escape the buzz of the city for a while with a visit to the Zoological Park set in gorgeous Botanical Gardens. Whilst the zoo is primarily for the rehabilitation of local animals, wondrous animals including a giant red panda, white tigers, elephants and more call the park home. After this, head into the town centre for a drink and sample some tasty local tapas for your evening meal as the sun goes down.

A 3rd day in Jerez de la Frontera

Visit the Plaza del Mercado, the local market, where you can buy your breakfast. Get a bagful of churros (which is basically a Spanish doughnut) and a hot chocolate then dip away for a yummy start to your third day in Jerez. Take a wander around the market stalls and soak up the Spanish atmosphere. After that, visit the Hammam Andalusi Arabic Baths for an afternoon of total relaxation with a massage thrown in too. End your stay with more tapas at a Flamenco bar for which Jerez is well known.

Day 4 in Jerez de la Frontera

Just because you are on a city break, it doesn’t mean you can’t visit the surrounding areas. On your last day, you might like to consider a trip to the coast with car hire for some sun and sea action. The popular Costa del Sol resorts of Marbella and Puerto Banus are around a 2-hour drive away.

If you don’t fancy driving quite as far but still want to sniff the sea air, Cadiz with its gorgeous sandy beaches is a lot closer and can be reached in 40 minutes by car.

My wife and I had a very pleasant 1 night stay in the Sherry Park Hotel some years ago, when Monarch Airlines introduced flights there from Manchester, but regrettably have since ceased to operate this service, due presumably to low passenger numbers occasioned by the slowing development of the Costa de Luz area of Western Spain. However everything you say about Jerez is certainly correct, and I think you have promoted the area very well, which it justly deserves. The Sherry Park Hotel had an offer on at the time, and it was a most enjoyable stay, excellent dinner, and a Breakfast Buffet to end all Breakfast Buffets. We did not hire a car on this occasion, but combined our visit to also visit Seville, and flew back from Malaga. The jouneys in between being conducted by the excellent Spanish Railway Network. We would recommend that taking the more expensive option of Lunch in a Bodega Visit (Tio Pepe), supposedly the “Best One” to visit.

  • How can you visit Jerez and not see the Andalusian horses.

    Hi John,

Thanks for sharing your comments; it’s great to hear that you are tempted to visit Jerez de la Frontera – the sherry is definitely a convincing reason to visit there!

It certainly sounds like you have visited some wonderful areas of Spain to date as well.

We don’t have any suggested itineraries for those areas yet but there is certainly likely to be some more in the future so keep an eye on our blog for our latest suggestions and tips!

I had not considered Jerez de la Frontera seriously but now I will plan to visit and sample some sherry there. We will stay at Los Amigos Beach Club in Mijas but plan to see Ronda, Sevilla & Granada. We want to see La Feria de Sevilla or Malaga. Do you have any information about these?
We have visited Spain three times already. The last time we drove north to Asturias and stayed in Oviedo, saw Gijon and several other towns. Love Asturias but prefer Barcelona and the warm Mediterranean coast.

    Muchas Gracias.
