A visit to Costa Rica is always going to be an assault on the senses. Most places with a tropical climate are. Costa Rica is on a whole other scale though. It bursts with colours, flavours, sights and sounds. You’d be hard pressed to be disappointed by this multi-lingual, multi-ethnic and multicultural country. What does Costa Rica have in store for the first sense; sight? Well the easy answer is plenty. We’ve selected some of the top picks that will have your eyes wide with awe.

Rainforests

The lush green rainforests which cover a vast proportion of the country are shrouded in mysterious, yet enticing appeal. There are numerous tours and activities on offer that give you the opportunity to experience it. Whether you want to traipse into the depths of the rainforest or would prefer a slightly less strenuous option, there’s a tour available. Waterways, rainforests and far from flat terrain can only mean one thing; waterfalls. Beautiful wildlife

When it comes to wildlife, Costa Rica is the ultimate sight for sore eyes. Especially when considering the birds here. Even if you’ve never had the slightest interest in birds before your visit, you will be transformed into an amateur birdwatcher. The tropical climate is the perfect environment for some of the most wonderful winged creatures you can imagine. Exotic colours, calls and plumage will enrapture you. You won’t be disappointed when it comes to other wildlife either. You will continually spot beautiful species during your visit.

Tortuguero

Tortuguero is a particularly great spot for wildlife watching. The tiny village is separated from the mainland and is nestled on a sand bar island. The beaches spanning the edges of the village are a famous nesting area for sea turtles. Time it right and you will be in for a treat. A large area on the mainland has been transformed into a National Park of the same name. Several lagoons and waterways provide the perfect habitat for multiple other species. A canal sailing tour will deliver sightings of crocodiles, turtles, manatees and crabs as well as many birds and mammals such as jaguar and monkeys hiding in the fringed trees.

Marvel at volcanoes

Volcanoes around the world continue to captivate us and Costa Rica’s example; Arenal Volcano, aptly follows suit. Rising dramatically and with almost perfect symmetry from the blanket of rainforest at its base, the Arenal Volcano is one of the country’s most striking natural sights. It will hold your attention from the word go. Previously, the volcano would entertain guests with regular night time fireworks emitting from the crater. Although now dormant, the appeal has not lessened. Hike the rocky terrain and drink in the views of the surrounding national park.
