Despite its relatively small size, the bustling port town of San Sebastian is the life and soul of La Gomera, the second smallest of the Canary Islands. This wonderful town offers everything your heart desires all in one place. It has a sun-kissed beach on your doorstep with stunning scenery as your backdrop. Not to mention friendly locals, great food and plenty to do, all combined with a healthy dose of culture.
Dripping in culture
The culture comes in the form of San Sebastian’s affiliation with the infamous Christopher Columbus. There are a variety of attractions related to him, as well as the ever popular Columbus trail around the town. One of the most popular buildings linked to him is the Casa de la Agunada on Calle Real. Columbus was thought to have drunk from the well located in the central patio.
The building has had several uses over the years but it now houses the tourist office and an exhibition entitled ‘La Gomera and the Discovery of America’. This highlights the islands important role in the discovery of America. The Iglesia de la Virgen de la Asunción is another sight worthy of a visit. This is where Columbus and his men were said to have come to pray before their departure.
Explore the Torre del Conde
The Torre del Conde is another interesting building worth visiting. This small medieval fort dates back to 1447. It can be found in an attractive setting in Parque de la Torre. In the tower you can see old maps of both San Sebastian and the rest of the island.
Bustling San Sebastian
As the main port of the island, San Sebastian boasts a steady flow of activity. This meaning there is never a dull day. Plenty of people arrive on ferries from the surrounding islands, particularly from Los Cristianos on Tenerife. The majestic backdrop of Mount Teide is a breath-taking reminder of Tenerife’s close proximity to La Gomera. The harbour area is always bustling with activity. It’s also a hub for many activities including a variety of water sports. Embark on a range of whale watching or deep sea fishing trips too. Afterwards, there is a charming selection of shops to peruse in the town. Relax and one of the cafés and restaurants. Stop for a drink or a bite to eat to relax whilst enjoying the ocean view.
Amble along the cliff-tops
If you can’t get enough of the fabulous view, take a walk up to the impressive cliff tops which tower over San Sebastian. The views both of La Gomera and nearby Tenerife are impeccable and best enjoyed with the aid of a picnic. Should you be searching for a more active opportunity, ask about boat or cycle hire from the marina. Alternatively, head over to one of the two volcanic sandy beaches for swimming and snorkelling opportunities. Playa de San Sebastian is larger but in close proximity to the harbour. Whereas Playa de la Cueva is quieter and a bit smaller. Take your pick or visit both!
Discover the rest of La Gomera
The appeal of La Gomera doesn’t stop in San Sebastian. The rest of the island is a haven of things to see and do, interspersed with the dramatic and alluring countryside.
A particular highlight includes the Garajonay National Park which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. It is a contrast to the primarily volcanic terrain elsewhere on the island and boasts lush vegetation fed by natural springs and streams.
If you are dreaming of some sun for your winter getaway, consider a stay in San Sebastian. It is a true gem sparkling in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean and the perfect base from which to explore the wonderful island of La Gomera.
