Planning a long road trip across an open road that stretches out for miles and miles? You may need to at first ask “how far can I drive in a rental car”. The answer depends on several factors and the type of booking you made. The rental car mileage restrictions and cross border policy will need to be checked before confirming your booking if you’re planning to drive far.
To view these policies, click on “view rental conditions” and scroll down to the sections “mileage restrictions” and “cross border”. More detail on these will be provided below. If you have any questions about these or simply want to find the best way to plan a long-distance road trip, contact the Zest support team and we’ll be happy to help!

Rental car mileage restrictions
Under “view rental conditions” you will be able to see if your specific car rental quote has any mileage restrictions. Most of our bookings at Zest Car Rental come with unlimited mileage (subject to fair mileage use policy) meaning you won’t need to stress about how many miles you drive. However, some companies may impose a mileage limit. This restricts you to a certain number of miles for the period you have rented the vehicle for.
Unlimited mileage
This ensures that you are not restricted to a specific mileage limit whilst the rental contract is in place. Unlimited mileage (subject to fair usage) is included in our headline price at most locations worldwide with most of the car rental providers that we work with. This ensures that you’re free to drive for as long as you want! Just make sure you’re aware of your cross-border policies (details about this below). For long term rentals (25 days or more), a fair usage policy may apply, and we recommend contacting our office in the UK before travel if you have any doubts/concerns regarding your mileage usage.
Don’t forget to return the car with the same amount of fuel as what it had at the start of the rental. Read up on our Driving guides for local driving tips and legislations if you plan to use your unlimited mileage for a holiday road trip.
Cross Border
To view cross border policies, click on “view rental conditions” and scroll down to the “cross border” section. This provides information on whether you’re allowed to cross the border in your rental car, if there is a local fee, and how your insurance will be affected.
PLEASE NOTE that it’s important to confirm with your car rental provider about any cross border plans you have. Failure to do so may result in your insurance cover not being provided when you’re across the border. When transporting vehicles out of the country from which they are hired, full breakdown service may not be available. Make sure to check with the Zest team before making any travel arrangements.
