The Greek Island of Rhodes rarely sees anything other than blue skies and a sea of sunglasses. The weather here is what makes it so attractive to holidaymakers. Albeit not very often, the sunshine can sometimes be replaced by rain. Here are some things to do if the forecast warns of rain during your stay.

Museums

Rhodes and culture may not typically go hand in hand. There is a surprising depth to the island, that goes largely unknown because of the lure of the beach. There are a host of museums to be visited on the island and they will keep you both entertained and dry.

The Palace of the Grand Master is one of the most important and interesting buildings in Rhodes. Built back in the 14th century, the palace was built by the Knights of Rhodes who occupied the city from 1309 to 1522. A lot of the original structure was destroyed during an ammunition blast in 1856. However, it has since been extravagantly rebuilt and turned into a museum. Escape the downpour to explore the grandeur rooms. Gaze in awe at the antiquities within.

Art Gallery

The Municipal Art Gallery of Rhodes is home to one of the most significant collections of Modern Greek Art, featuring several prominent Greek artists. Many of the paintings found here have been featured in many exhibitions around Greece. There is a total of 690 pieces included in the exhibition. Only 90 of these can be viewed by the public. Rest assured that an afternoon spent here while the rain pours is an eye-opening experience.

Aquarium

The aquarium in Rhodes acts as both a research centre and an aquarium open to the public. Visitors can delight in seeing a huge and varied host of sea creatures including sea turtles, dolphins, seals, molluscs, echinoderms, crabs and many kinds of fish. As well as admiring the fish, visitors can spend time in the on-site museum. Here, you can view the permanent exhibitions of sharks, toothed whales, monk seals and more.

The aim of the aquarium is to present and preserve the sealife of the Mediterranean Sea. There is also a large area underground dedicated to the rehabilitation and care of injured sea turtles and dolphins from the nearby waters. Regardless of your age, sea creatures are fascinating because of their mysterious appeal, so this will make for an entertaining for all ages.

Rhodes is renowned for its fantastic weather and awesome beach culture. You are pretty much guaranteed to have great weather. If the sunshine does falter during your break away, use it as an opportunity to see a different side of Rhodes.

Have you got any other suggestions to keep you happy during a rare rainy day in Rhodes?
