Blessed with over 300 days of sunshine per year, the magnificent province of Malaga in Southern Spain boasts a year round appeal with scorching summers and mild winters. What do you do when you’re one of the unlucky ones though; the forecast warns of rain to remain for a couple of days. Sand and sangria is out of the window that’s for sure.
Well, don’t despair. Although Malaga isn’t totally free from the dreary and drizzly skies, there’s much more in store than the beach so here are some awesome remedies for a rainy day in this wonderful region.
Nerja Caves
Want to know one of the best rain remedies? Go somewhere it can’t reach you; underground! Nerja, a tiny village loaded with history is the location for said solution as it is home to extensive caves! Whilst the eroded cavities extend for a total length of 4,283 m, only one third of them can be accessed by visitors. Still, they make for a good visit and contain several primitive paintings. Particular highlights of the caves include the 32 metre high Hall of the Cataclysm, the Hall of the Phantoms, the Hall of the waterfall and of course the fairy tale inducing stalagmites and stalactites!
Picasso Museum
As we all know, Malaga is the birthplace of the well regarded artist Picasso and as such there are many attractions dedicated to him in the city itself. What better way to spend a rainy afternoon in the city than admiring his many incredible works of art in the Picasso Museum. With an extensive permanent collection as well as varying exhibits throughout the year all housed in a stunning 16th century building, you won’t fail to be impressed.
Andalucian Centre of Photography
Take a trip to the city of Almeria and explore some of the delights on offer. One lesser known attraction that will more than aptly fill a few wet hours is the Andalucian Centre of Photography. It is the only of its kind in the region and will be sure to get your imagination all fired up with the enchanting collection of international photography. It will undoubtedly be an inspiring way to spend a wet day plus, it’s free admission!
Costa del Sol
We know we said earlier that the beach is out of the question in the rain and this fact remains true; lying on a sun bed and getting drenched really doesn’t have quite the same appeal!
A drive along the Costa del Sol coastline in your hire car however, would make for an alternative afternoon. Seeing this usually glowing expanse of sea and sand in the rain can make for a dramatic juxtaposition. Watch the turbulent waves crash onto the coastline and get a new appreciation for Mother Nature, on one of her bad days. At the end of the drive you’ll reach Marbella where you can dart into a Spanish café for a hot drink and some tasty tapas then visit some of the indoor activities on offer here, such as the Bonsai Museum!
As the phrase goes, the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain! If however you get caught out and the sun doesn’t have his hat on during your visit, rest assured there are still plenty of alternative activities to enjoy in this fantastic region, you just have think outside the sand box!
