Dubrovnik is blessed with the stunning Adriatic Coast on it’s doorstep and the city is a true gem to visit during the summer months. Temperatures soar to 29°C and the sun makes the Adriatic ocean sparkle- oh, so inviting! If the clouds happen to roll in and ruin the day’s plans, here are some alternative suggestions to offer some shelter from the rain.

Rector’s Palace

Regarded as a must-see, this is a fantastic attraction to see whether rain or shine. It was home to the Rector of Dubrovnik who was elected by the Great Council to represent the Republic for the period of one month. During that time he wasn’t allowed to leave the palace at any time except on government business which is typical of the Dubrovnik Republic principle. The motto is stated above the doors of the Great council hall and when translated, reads “Forget private and deal with public business”. The palace is filled with artefacts that are rich in history including ceramics, paintings, textiles, photography and antique furniture to name but a few. The palace itself is built in Gothic-Renaissance style and its modest simplicity has its very own charm. A visit here will take you back in time and is the setting for an enchanting afternoon.

Wave Show

This may sound like a simplistic suggestion but if a thunderstorm brews, the sea can become impressively turbulent. Pull up a pew at one of the cafés that afford a view of the Old Town Walls and watch the wave show below you and the impressive light show as a result of the lightening. Watching a thunderstorm is priceless! Café Buza is a definite contender to consider and can be found nestled in the Old City Walls. Follow the small sign marked “Cold drinks” and you will be led through a hole in the wall which then opens out into a rock hugging café; the perfect place to enjoy the show.

Day trip to Montenegro

Escape Croatia and head to the equally stunning country of Montenegro with your hire car. Head for the city of Tivat just a few hours away and you’ve got yourself the perfect day trip! Take in the stunning countryside from the car window en route and you can stop and explore some of the rural picturesque villages. If you don’t fancy Tivat, you could always visit the smaller, medieval town of Kotor with the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, which dates to 1166, a particular highlight. A day trip is a great way to escape the rain of Dubrovnik and see some other areas that you may have otherwise missed.

Plan your Dubrovnik getaway

Stunning summer sunshine is one of the lures of Croatia but unfortunately we can’t control the weather. If it takes a temporary turn for the worst during your visit, seek sanctuary at one of these attractions.
