Alonissos
Alonissos is not only tranquil but remarkably green and fertile for an island in the Mediterranean. It is perfect for walkers and nature lovers who can explore the many coves and bays. The beaches are often deserted allowing you to claim a little piece of paradise for yourself.
Tavernas are the main source of nightlife here. Enjoy long leisurely evenings feasting on freshly caught seafood by the harbour, watching the sun set over the bay, and enjoying live music performed by a local band. You will find the best Tavernas in Chora, the island’s oldest village, and the port town Patriti. Alonissos is certainly a Greek experience to remember.
Getting there: To access the peaceful paradise of Alonissos take the ferry from Skiathos.
Paxos
Paxos Island is one of the best secret summer escapes in Europe. Only reachable by ferry it has stayed relatively protected from tourism. Its coastline is a striking contrast of dramatic cliffs and volcanic outcrops that shelter idyllic beaches. It is without doubt something to write home about.
Despite its intimate charm Paxos isn’t exactly known for its rusticity. In fact, it is an island where authentic Greek charm meets chic sophistication.
The towns are characterised by pastel coloured houses with wooden terraces. In the main town of Gaios you’ll see swanky yachts and dine at some of the best restaurants. Inland, amongst the ancient olive groves, donkey tracks and beautiful flowers, life is lived at a slow pace.
Getting there: You can reach Paxos by ferry from Corfu.
Ithaca
There’s a healthy sense of disconnect with the rest of the world on this particular island. Rugged mountains form the backdrop, and there are plenty of shepherds’ tracks that wind through the olive trees in the surrounding hills. Travel up into the cool of the mountains and view the capital Vathi and its horse-shoe shaped harbour from way up above. Then cool off on one of the island’s quiet pebble beaches – the crystal clear waters make up for the lack of sand and offer fantastic diving and snorkelling opportunities.
Head to Vathi for dinner where you can enjoy dinner at one of the many tavernas on the harbour front. Ask the owners to tell you which of the mythical Greek legends are said to originate from Ithaca for an evening of dramatic story telling.
Getting there: The beautiful and peaceful island of Ithaca can be reached by ferry from Kefalonia.

Ikaria
Ikaria is a local secret and a favourite holiday spot among Greek families but little known to tourists. The inhabitants of the island seem fairly out of touch with the rest of the world and tend to live by the rules of their own daily routines. This accounts for the island’s quirky reputation. Expect to indulge in long lazy late morning lie-ins and even later nights, as the shops and bars tend to open mid-afternoon and stay open all night.
Between May and October, the island is famed for hosting between two and four panygiria festivals per week. The panygiria are festive gatherings of communities and visitors for all-night dancing, drinking and feasting. Enjoy delicious local specialities and homemade red wine.
You won’t find a more authentic Greek party island than Ikaria!
The island boasts a beautiful rugged landscape that is crisscrossed by a number of rivers, waterfalls and gorges. Giant Neolithic-style boulders perch tentatively atop hills and the crumbling remains of ancient temples add a sense of history.
Getting there: To reach Ikaria catch the ferry from Athens.
