Murcia (San Javier) Airport is moving to Corvera from 2019.

In early 2019, Murcia (San Javier) airport will be shutting it’s doors and moving 40km across mainland Spain to Corvera where it will be branded Murcia International Airport. Here’s some of the key facts you need to know about the move.

What if I have car hire booked for Murcia (San Javier) after it moves to Corvera?

All car hire providers currently based Murcia (San Javier) will also be making the move to Corvera. This means if you’ve booked a hire car for a time after the move on the 15th Jan 2019, you’ll simply fly into Corvera (Murcia International) instead and pick up your car from the same provider there.

What if I have flights booked for a time after Murcia (San Javier) moves to Corvera?

Just like with car hire providers, all currently scheduled flights with all providers will still service Corvera. This means any flights you’ve got booked for early 2019 or later will still be fine, you’ll just fly into Corvera when Murcia (San Javier) closes.

Key dates for the move from Murcia San Javier to Corvera

Murcia San Javier (current) will close on 14th January 2019.

Murcia International (Corvera) will open on 15th January 2019.

As above, if you’ve got a hire car or flights booked for times after these dates into Murcia San Javier, they’ll simply fly into Murcia International at Corvera instead.

More about the move to Corvera

The new Corvera airport is bigger, more modern and should be well suited to handling a bigger volume of passengers, said to be able to handle around 3 million per year. The new location is also prime for tourists, it is closer to Murcia and features equal if not better transport links to the city, good news for your 2019 summer holiday to Spain. The new Corvera airport is closer to popular beach locations like Puerto Mazarron and Bolnuevo. Sadly though, the new location isn’t as convenient for other popular coastal destinations that previous flyers to Murcia San Javier airport might be used to.

The actual airport facilities at Corvera were completed way back in 2012, but due to the financial crisis and an economic nosedive it was never opened. After a time, it looked like the airport would never see passengers, but after the management contract was handed to AENA in December 2017, things started to look up for Corvera airport.

AENA currently manage Murcia San Javier and instead of competing with themselves, decided San Javier was to be shut down and all operations moved to Corvera. The contract was won by AENA when French company Edeis withdrew from management contract proposals and left AENA as the last company vying for control of the new Corvera airport. AENA president, Jaime Garcia-Legaz is said to be hopeful that Corvera will open sooner rather than later and possibly the two airports could co-exist for a short time.
