It’s cheesy but the best present is visiting your mother. If you live close by go over, cook dinner, etc. and spend some time with your mum. If you can’t, card, flowers, and phone call are the bare minimum.

Spa days are the perfect Mother’s Day gift. Take the day off and relax with a spot of hydrotherapy, massage, sauna, etc. There are numerous places to choose from and wherever you live you won’t be far from at least one spa. Ragdale Hall in Leicestershire, East Anglia’s Clarice House, and nationwide Q Hotels are amongst the big names running Mother’s Day offers. So why not book in today?

Nail session

If the idea of a Spa Day sounds good but is a bit outside your budget, why not consider a manicure/pedicure session at a beauty salon? Throw in a massage and you’ve got yourself a great day out. There are numerous local salons to choose from so whether you’re a regular or a first timer, there’s no shortage of locations.

A staple of Mother’s Day treats for years, you can’t beat a good Afternoon Tea. Whether it’s cucumber sandwiches or smoked salmon, lemon posset or mini mille-feuille, an Afternoon Tea always has something you’ll love. But book quickly! London gets all the plaudits but there are some great venues outside the M25. Try the Tea Parlour in Liverpool, Betty’s in Harrogate and York, Surrey’s Pennyhill Park, or Lewtrenchard Manor in Devon.

Personalised gift

Head over to Not on the High Street for some great gift ideas such as a family poster or personalised necklace. There are a huge range of smaller gifts to bulk out the main event so you’re bound to find something that says what you want. The only restriction is your imagination!

Cookery class

Head to cookery school to take a class in something you both want to master. Love fish but don’t know where to start? Rick Stein’s Seafood School in Padstow has great teachers and a fantastic kitchen. If you’re in the South East, head to Leith’s School of Food & Wine in London. Forget the standard French and Italian courses, other options include Thai, Indian, and Vietnamese.

Weekend break

Take a long weekend and head somewhere she’s always wanted to visit. It doesn’t have to be abroad, there are plenty of places in the UK to consider too. Why not head down to Burgh Island in Devon, the inspiration behind Soldier Island in Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None.

Alternatively, make your way up to Scotland and Loch Awe for a weekend by the water. It’s a great base from which to head up into the highlands or explore the coast.

West End Show

If you can get tickets, why not head to the West End to catch a show? The Book of Mormon, Miss Saigon, The Mousetrap, Cats, Forget Me Not…. The list goes on! Catch a matinee and top the evening off with dinner at Cantina Laredo in Covent Garden or Efes in Soho?
