300km south of Barcelona, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea is the small island of Mallorca. Famous for its stunning beaches and crystal clear waters, it has been a popular tourist destination since the 1950s. If you are not the type of person who can sit on the beach all day, or you just fancy doing something different, then why not hire a car and see some more of the island? Here at Economy Car Hire we love this gorgeous island and a driving route through Mallorca’s magnificent mountains is perfect for a day trip.
Take a stroll, then hit the road
Start your day by strolling around Andratx Harbour on the west coast of the island, which is less than a 30 minute drive from Palma. This beautiful marina has a glamorous atmosphere and a mid-morning coffee overlooking the sea makes for the perfect start. The harbour is slightly detached from the main town and a short drive will put you right in the heart of the town. There are some lovely old buildings here and the locals are incredibly friendly, so make sure you pay it a visit before you get back in your car.
Mountains to the left of me, oceans to the right
As you leave Andratx take the MA-10 heading north. The road will take you to the coast through some brilliant countryside. The road meanders through the rocky landscape providing you with great views. The road condition is good so relax and enjoy the ride. You’ll know when you hit the coast, because the winding road will reveal a magnificent view of the ocean, from high above the beach. There are high tree studded mountains on your left, and the open ocean is to your right, making this one of the most picturesque stretches of roads on the island.
As you continue along the route, the road will become windier, which is great for all you driving enthusiasts. The weather, road surface, views and bends all work together to make an exhilarating combination. As you continue, you will pass through small villages and isolated houses before you reach the small town of Estellencs. This is a good opportunity to stretch your legs and take in some of the fantastic architecture here. The whole leg from Andratx Harbour to Estellencs is only 20 minutes’ drive, so you will have plenty of time to enjoy yourself in the town.
A real driver’s road
As you leave Estellencs you will continue on the MA-10 towards Banyabulfar, which should take around 10 minutes. The road will continue to excite you and the views just keep getting better and better. The vistas as you enter the town are particularly superb and there are numerous laybys where you can stop to take photos. Banyabulfar is a good place for a pit-stop and the range of cafés and restaurants mean that anyone and everyone could enjoy a good lunch here. Make sure you pick a table in the shade so you can cool off whilst you enjoy some good food, overlooking the sea.
As you leave Banyabulfur the MA-10 will take you inland, traversing high into the hills. As you reach its peak take a break and pull over. You might not have been on the road long but this is definitely a place to stand and stare at the view. There is something relaxing about being high up, and this is no exception. There is a quiet atmosphere that is only interrupted by intermittent bird song. As you start your descent into the valley, the view will decrease and you will become immersed in scrubland. This won’t last for long though and in a couple of minutes you’ll begin a twisting climb again.
The final, not so, straight
The incredible views from up high will continue for the duration of the final leg to Soller. You will pass through some charming small towns, including Esporles and Valldemosa. You can stretch your legs at either of these locations and there are ample opportunities for refreshments. The total driving time from Valldemosa to Soller will be under 30 minutes so there is no rush. As you approach Soller, you will pass through Deia, in the heart of the mountains. The town is sprawled over the peak of a hill and is a great place to explore if you have the time.
The final 10-15 minute drive from Deia to Soller is as beautiful as what has come before it. The setting sun will glisten over the ocean and any remaining space on your camera is likely to be filled before you finish the trip. An evening meal in Soller is something to look forward to and there are some delicious offering in the town. It is the perfect way to end this fantastic scenic drive and conclude a brilliant day.
