We’ve all been there, you think you’re being super organised getting to the airport 3 hours before your flight. However, the queue for security is tiny, your baggage checked in and now you’re sat in the departure lounge. What do you do now? Here’s our top tips for killing time at the airport.
Take photos of planes!

Instead of watching the planes take off and land, why not grab some snaps while you’re at it? Usually departure lounges overlook the runways and apron (plane parking bays). Rather than taking the usual airport selfies, try getting a snap of a plane taking off. These multi-million-pound machines are feats of modern engineering. Rather than taking photos in museum, take some while the planes are actually in use! Take a read of our travel photo guide if you’re a novice!
Window shop

Departure lounges are full of designer shops and boutiques, take your time to peruse their wares. Try on some outfits, there’s often a style for everyone. Sure, everything is expensive but why not look around? For tech geeks, there’s usually plenty of gadget shops. Try out the new iPad, test some new headphone or dip your toe in the world of VR. Treat yourself, there’s always the duty-free stocking your favourite tipple.
Talk to people

Especially if you’re travelling alone, try talking to other like-minded travellers. They’ll usually be in the same boat as you. Bored, not sure how to kill the time, wishing they were already at their destination. Sure, some will be enjoying their alone-time, but there will be a few just wanting to spark a conversation with someone. Travelling solo soon? Read our guide to making the most of it.
Learn the lingo!
Wherever you’re heading to, life is always easier if you can speak a little of the local language. Simple terms such as hello, goodbye, please and thank you go a long way, even if that’s all you can manage. You can head to our travel guides for a few helpful phrases. Alternatively, there are plenty of books or apps to brush up on your language skills.
Eat and watch the world go by

My personal favourite. Head to a restaurant of your choice, sit down and eat. Maybe try something you wouldn’t usually go for. If your flight is early in the morning, be sure to have a hearty breakfast to start your day. If it’s in the evening, perhaps choose something light if you’re sleeping on the plane. The best bit though? Just sitting and watching the world go by. Planes taking off and landing, other passengers rushing around, or observing the comings and goings of the airport.
If you’re like me and you end up getting to the airport super-early (even though it can be frustrating) it’s great knowing you can relax before your flight. No-one wants to start their relaxing holiday in a rush.
