Undoubtedly one of the most popular countries for us beach loving Brits, Cyprus comes up trumps as a holiday destination. Easy to reach and virtually guaranteed to deliver beautiful blue skies and top temperatures, it’s no wonder. Each part of the island offers something a little different, so no visit will ever be the same!

Why to visit Limassol

First time visitors often head to the man-made resort of Paphos in the southwest, or the more historic Larnaca in the south east. If this is your first time visiting Cyprus, or indeed you are a returning fan, why not base yourself in the thriving city of Limassol. This is sandwiched between the two so you can get the best of both worlds.

Fantastic location

Located at the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, Limassol is very much a living, breathing city, the second biggest in the country in fact. Don’t let that put you off though; the bustling atmosphere adds to the charm and the thriving tourist area and beautiful sandy beach are the icing on the cake. The endearing old town remains untouched by tourism meaning your visit here incorporates a multitude of different aspects that will appeal to all. Wander amongst the meze restaurants and wine and beer cellars, take a seat at an outside café and enjoy the vibe of traditional Cypriot life.

Historic ruins galore

As a country regarded for its long, rich history, there are naturally numerous archaeological sites to be found across Cyprus and the area surrounding Limassol is no different. Step back in history at The Ruins of Amathus; this important ancient Cypriot city dating back to the 9th century makes for a particularly intriguing visit and is located just 6 miles away. Also synonymous with many myths and legends, a visit to Aphrodite’s Rock is essential. A bit further away but no trip to Cyprus would be complete without seeing the birthplace of the Greek Goddess of love. Limassol castle and Curium Amphitheatre are some alternative historical sites that are certainly worthy of a visit for those with an interest in the past.

Get active

For those who like a little action, active entertainment is plentiful too. The stunning Troodos Mountains are literally right on your doorstep. The beautiful scenery is perfect for an early morning hike. Make it extra special and make your way there just before sunset when the views will be even better. Sayious Adventure Park takes everything up a notch offering paintball, 4×4 driving, go karting and archery all in one place. The ocean is of course a huge allure so dive in and enjoy a number of water sports, or enjoy something a little more relaxed with a spot of snorkelling or diving.

Nightlife highlights

When the night rolls in, it’s time to party and the Limassol nightlife is a huge allure to younger visitors. Take your pick from the nice selection of bars and clubs to be found both in the tourist area and in the depths of the city where the locals are more likely to frequent.

If you want to explore further afield you can head in literally any direction and not be disappointed with what you find. If you are after natural beauty, Akamas Peninsular on the west side of the island is a large national park boasting exceptional views, beautiful scenery and numerous little taverns dotted around sporadically to offer respite from the Cypriot heat with a cool drink. Fig Tree Bay on the east is really beautiful too with traditional villages, perfect if you are looking to escape the crowds.

This is just a taste of what Limassol has, why not consider a trip here and discover it inside out!
