Dublin is the gateway to the Emerald Isle. It certainly packs a punch when it comes to things to do. The city boasts a good mix of historical and modern attractions. There is something for everyone to enjoy and you could happily spend more than a few days here. If you are only in Dublin for one day, plan an itinerary so you can see the best bits. Here’s our one day guide to Dublin.
Morning
Start your day at Merrion Square, the most popular and finest square in the city and a great base from which to start your one day adventure. It also happens to be a shrine to the writer Oscar Wilde with a large statue and two square marble columns covered in his quotes.
From here, head off in search of breakfast. A café called the Queen of Tarts is renowned as one the best! Once you have had your fill on either pastries or a cooked Irish breakfast, you are perfectly located to start your exploration of Dublin Castle.
This majestic building will be high on any visitors list of things to see. The castle, which covers an area of 11 acres, has been occupied since 1204 AD and is a staple feature of Irelands’ history. Along with the castle, there are two museums, the Chester Beatty Library and the Chapel Royal to discover.
Now it’s time to head out and spend some time in the Gardens. Particularly the Dubh Linn Gardens which not many people know about due to its hidden location! Take a stroll and discover several pieces of artwork dotted amongst the flora. If you fancy a drink, head to the coffee shop which is located inside the library, just outside the gardens.
Late Morning
The next stop of the day should be the popular Loft Markets for a spot of contemporary retail therapy. Here you’ll find plenty of up and coming fashion designers plus a range of vintage clothing on offer too. Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, saunter through en route to Christ Church Cathedral. This is the oldest building in Dublin and dates back to the 11th century so anyone who is keen on history will be in their element here. Gaze in awe at the beautiful interior and explore the fascinating medieval crypt beneath the cathedral which beholds some intricate carvings and more.
Dublin is of course famous Guinness. No visit here would be complete without stopping by at the Guinness Store House. Learn of the history of this worldwide favourite. Sample a pint at the Gravity Bar afterwards whilst you drink in the views of the city below. Grab some lunch at the restaurant to save a bit of time.
Afternoon
The next stop should be Kilmainham Gaol for an interesting insight into more of Ireland’s history. This prison saw the rebels from the 1916 Easter Rising executed and is also one of the largest unoccupied gaols in Europe! One of the major attractions is a large exhibition showing the political and penal history of the prison and its restoration over the years. A guided tour is undoubtedly the best way to visit this attraction.
At the afternoon begins to draw out, head off for a short stroll in the National Botanic Gardens for a relaxing end to a busy day. You will find a wonderful selection of over 15,000 species of plants with a rose garden, the alpine yard, pond area, rock garden, arboretum and more.
Evening
As the sun sets and evening begins, it is time to head south east for a truly traditional end to your time in Ireland. The Landsdowne Hotel has just the right entertainment up its sleeve;.The Irish House Party offers a four course dinner with Irish music and dancing to keep you entertained into the wee hours. You get to learn a song in Irish, or learn some Irish River dancing steps if you have the guts. If you don’t feel like participating you can just sit back and enjoy! What a way to end your day here.
