With Britain having enjoyed just one fleeting week of sunshine so far this summer, a late summer break is certainly appealing. With rising costs, is it feasible? With a bit of research there are some last minute bargains to be had. With the euro exchange rate still very favourable against the pound, you can get a lot more for your money when you are away. Why not escape to one these beautiful yet affordable islands for a long weekend and get yourself a bit of guaranteed sunshine.

Canary Islands

Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are all fabulous choices. Largely catering for tourists, you will find a myriad of accommodation options. Many resorts offer half board or all inclusive packages to help you keep the costs down. Travelling at the end of the season means further price cuts are likely. Temperatures usually hit mid to high 20°c (65-80°f), at this time of the year. The sea is still warm but just the right temperature to cool you off. There are both golden and black sandy beaches to choose from across the islands. Don’t forget the great selection of watersports, entertaining nightlife, duty-free shopping, family friendly attractions and stunning natural beauty to be explored by the more adventurous. Each island is slightly different, but any of the Canary Islands would be an excellent choice for a late summer break in September.

The Azores

Unlike many other islands, the Azores, found 900 miles off the coast of Portugal, aren’t on the beaten tourist trail. Whilst this may mean an absence of big, bargain resorts, the main focus lies on self-catering options. You are then fully in control of costs. Fair priced flights can be found too, particularly if you fly mid-week. The most affordable aspect of a late holiday here, is that as another island to use the Euro, you can really save when it comes to spending on location. With natural beauty the biggest allure, most of your time will be spent exploring the lakes, valleys and mountains that span the island. There is also excellent whale and dolphin watching opportunites. With pleasant temperatures to accompany you, you will surely find that the Azores is just the holiday destination you are after.

Greek Islands

Greece and its financial situation have been in the limelight lately. Don’t let this put you off. The many Greek Islands still offer brilliant sunshine, great beaches and beautiful scenery. If anything, they are more affordable than ever. The hardest part about a holiday here is choosing which Greek Island, from the hundreds of choices, to visit! In late August and September, the sun is still shining merrily away between the high 20°cs and low 30°cs (75°f-88°f). Try visiting local restaurants and rest your head at locally run accommodation. You will really help with the economy, not to mention enjoying an authentic, unforgettable experience too.
