Ibiza is well known for its notorious nightlife and beach resorts crammed full of sun worshippers. When you are planning to enjoy some rest and relaxation the party island isn’t going to be your first port of call.

However, at Economy Car Hire we are privy to a vast array of travel secrets and we’ve got a few to share with you about Ibiza’s quieter side!

The majority of the island’s popular party resorts are grouped together in southern Ibiza. This leaves the towns and beaches in northern Ibiza largely untouched.

Ibiza is in fact home to some of the most peaceful and secluded beaches in the Balearics. Read on to discover our favourites…

Cala Mastella

Just a 30 minute drive north of Ibiza Town, Cala Mastella is the perfect antidote to any over-crowded resort. A small but perfectly formed cove, Cala Mastella is surrounded by cliffs and is utterly unspoilt. Besides the odd local family or fellow ‘in-the-know’ holidaymaker you will have the beach to yourself. The seclusion of this beach makes you feel like you’ve found your own personal piece of paradise! Cala Mastella is also one of the best snorkelling spots in Ibiza. Smooth rocks form the seabed here so the water stays completely clear!

How to get there: This beach is only accessible by car so you don’t have to fear a noisy bus load of people turning up and disturbing the peace! From the village of San Carlos follow signs to Cala Mastella. You will find the car park on a left hand turn just before you reach the beach. Spaces are limited so arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Cala Xuclar

This beach is a precious horseshoe shaped bay. It’s a picture perfect hideaway plucked straight off a postcard. Sample its turquoise blue waters framed by fisherman’s huts and lush green trees. The true beauty of Cala Xuclar is that it never gets crowded; even during the peak summer months. Wonderfully tranquil, it provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of Ibiza’s busy resorts. Due to its north-west location, Cala Xuclar also makes for that perfect private spot to watch the sunset.

How to get there: Like Cala Mastella, Cala Xuclar is only accessible by car. Follow the road to Portinax and look out for signs to Cala Xarracca and Cala Xuclar.

Pou des Lleo

Venture off-the-beaten track to the idyllic beach of Pou des Lleo. Its half-hidden location means it’s rarely busy and only known to locals. Low-lying rust-red cliffs and fishing huts surround the beach. The cliffs give Pou des Lleo plenty of character. They also form interesting rock formations below sea-level and make for some great snorkelling! If you are planning a day at Cala Mastella or Cala Xuclar remember to pack a picnic and plenty of water. At Pou des Lleo you will find a small snack bar as well as a beach restaurant. These both offer mouth-watering delicious paella and seafood dishes for when you get peckish.

Couple at the Beach

How to get there: Head towards Cala Boix then follow signs for Pou des Lleo. Pou des Lleo is also only accessible by car. However, although the car park is small it doesn’t usually fill up.

Our top tip!

Discover Atlantis- If you are partying in the south and need a break from the crowded beaches, seek out Sa Pedrera. Once a stone quarry, Sa Pedrera is now a rather unconventional beach. Nicknamed Atlantis by the locals, this hidden gem is full of historical treasures. Examine the extraordinary carvings sculptors and stone masons have drawn into the cliff face.

Sa Pedrera is most easily reached by boat. However, if you have arrived by car, the climb down to the beach from the car park is a pleasant one if a little steep on the way back up!
