Toll roads in the USA provide alternative routes between locations at a fee that can vary in cost (usually averaging at around $5). Thirty-eight states in the US have toll roads which are operated by a variety of different companies. Paying for tolls can become confusing! Read on to find out more.

Types of toll roads

There are 3 different ways of paying a toll roll that you may encounter when driving in the USA:

  1. Fixed barrier system – this is the classic toll system where you pay a fixed time-based toll at a booth.
  2. Ticket system – with this system pay a toll based on your entry and exit toll combination.
  3. Distance based – with distance based you simply pay for how far you’ve travelled along the toll road

How do I pay for the US toll roads?

You can pay for USA toll roads in multiple ways. Barrier or ticket systems usually have the option to pay via cash or card at a booth. However, tolls will predominantly be paid for online or with transponders. Or alternatively, you can choose to avoid them!

Can I buy a USA toll transponder?

Toll transponders can be purchased from your car rental provider locally. Unfortunately, there isn’t one definitive transponder that covers all the US (most common one you’ll find is the EZ-Pass). Your car rental provider will be able to give you the option to opt-in for all-inclusive tolling within the time of rental (usually charged per day).

E.gDollar and Thrifty offer the PlatePass which is an All-Inclusive transponder paid per day that enables you to use toll lanes without incurring any told road fines or penalties.

What happens if I drive through a toll road without paying?

If you drive through a toll road that needs to be paid online or with a transponder, the car rental company will receive a fine and you will be billed. Most toll roads in the USA will have plenty of notice on signs prior to driving on them so keep your wits about you!

Avoiding USA toll roads

Toll roads are usually just a way to get from A to B quicker, they will be other ways to get to your chosen location without the need for tolls! Simply plan out your route before travelling or select the “avoid toll roads” filter within your GPS or navigation app.
