With Father’s Day approaching, we’re taking a look at some of the best beer destinations in Europe. Alternatively, why not check out some of these ideas for Father’s Day?

Whether you’re looking to discover a new, craft beer or just want to explore the surroundings with a hire car, our Father’s Day suggestions allow you to do both!

Europe’s beer heritage can be traced back over 1,000 years and every country celebrates it in one way or another. But forget Heineken and Carlsberg, we’re interested in craft beers made (preferably) by hand. Micro-breweries are popping up all over the UK and it’s no different in Europe.

Father’s Day in Munich

Must try beer: Löwenbräu Münchner Dunkel.

It goes without saying but Munich is Europe’s most famous beer destination thanks to Oktoberfest alone. But forget the festival and you’ll discover a number of excellent small bars with a friendly atmosphere and wide variety of beers to sample.

The biggest brewery names are Löwenbräu and Hofbräuhaus but Weisses Brauhaus and Giesinger Bräu are starting to make names for themselves.
The Tap-House Munich is home to 200 craft beers and is a great place to start. Getränke Oase Liebsch and Hackerhaus are also well worth visiting.

Prague

Home to Staropramen, Budweiser Budvar, and Pilsner Urquell, the Czech Republic has a rich brewing history which dates back to 933AD. Whilst it’s gathered a reputation for stag parties, Prague itself is a beautiful city well worth a visit. Whilst Pilsner and Budweiser have become synonymous with other beers in recent years, the original phrases were used to denote the region the beer was from.

When it comes to beer halls and bars, the 15th century U Fleku and Bredovsky Dvur are particularly popular. U Sedmi Svabu and U Vejvodu are also well worth visiting.

Norwich

Must try beer: Redwell Steam.

Once the capital of East Anglian beer, Norwich used to boast a pub for every day of the year. Whilst numbers have dropped, Norwich is still home to some excellent pubs and breweries. Breweries such as Woodforde’s, Redwell, Wolf Brewery, and Grain can all be found either in or close to the city and offer some fantastic beers.

Further afield, the brewing giant Adnams is based in Southwold. Home to a wide variety of bitter and lager, they’ve branched into distillation and now produce their own whisky, gin, vodka, and much more. Staying in Suffolk, Greene King is based in Bury St Edmunds and is home to one of the top selling cask ales in the UK, Greene King IPA.

When it comes to sampling some of the local produce in Norwich, the Beehive and trio of Fat Cat pubs are well worth a visit. The Belgian Monk and The Murderers are also excellent.

Alsace

Must try beer: Schutzenberger Jubilator
The Alsatians have been making beer since 1260 and there’s more to it than Kronenbourg. There are a number of micro-breweries in Alsace that are producing some wonderful beers. Micro-Brasserie La Lanterne, Micro-Brasserie Au Brasseur, and Micro-Brasserie Kohler-Rehm for example are producing excellent beers whilst the Brasserie Artisanale de Saint Pierre is home to a variety of styles.

When it comes to pubs or bars, French café culture means you’re unlikely to find a pub as you know it. Head to the cafés near the breweries and you shouldn’t be disappointed. If you drive to Alsace, you can do a beer run on the way back!

Get planning!

This is obviously just a sample of what’s available for Father’s Day but the key is to think outside the box.
