The Garden of France, another name for the Loire Valley, spans the middle stretch of the Loire River which flows through central France. The area, filled with storybook châteaux and surrounded by rolling vineyards, fruit orchards and fields full of growing vegetables, is truly the stuff that fairytales are made of. It doesn’t take much to fall in love with the beautiful Loire Valley. Here are some wonderful ways to experience it that will help you on your way.

Explore the Loire River

Once known as the Royal River, the Loire River itself, around which this popular area is focussed, is particularly beautiful and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the longest river in the country allowing for endless enjoyment! Perhaps you might like to experience it from the water and spend a day paddling from a canoe or kayak. One of the most popular starting points is Chaumont sur Loire and the route continues for however long you can keep up the paddling, although Amboise tends to make a good end point. Dotted with small islands too, there is always somewhere to stop for a break and enjoy a delicious picnic of authentic French fare! Flanked by stunning scenery and of course the ever present châteaux you can enjoy a good dose of exercise made all the better by the wondrous views engulfing you.

Take to the skies

See everything from a completely different perspective and take to the skies in a hot air balloon, an activity that is becoming more and more popular amongst visitors. Hot air balloon flying over Cher
Seeing the Loire River snaking through the countryside and grape laden vineyards is complimented perfectly by the views of the châteaux from above. The ride is a truly unique experience that won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

Hire a boat

Perhaps you might prefer a slightly different option and if so, boat hire is the answer. Equipped with everything you need and no license necessary as long as you abide to the rules of the river (in particular, not exceeding the speed limit) it’s a great way to spend a day or two!As well as enjoying the scenery, the tranquil nature of the boat allows you to see so much more; keep your eyes peeled for the many different species of bird and other wonderful flora and fauna as you breeze quietly through the water.

Try bicycling

There are hundreds of cycling paths to choose from and they vary in length to suit all abilities so there’s no excuse not to hire a bicycle and follow a trail! Arguably one of the best ways to explore, cycling means you will be able to unearth treasures off the beaten track with the sun on your face and the breeze streaking through your hair!

Drive through the Loire Valley

To really get the most of the region however, it is worth considering hiring a car in France. Enjoy the freedom and flexibility of your own transport; see all of the best sights, explore the many towns and cities in the area and try your hand at plenty of activities along the way. The fine and historic towns of Amboise, Blois, Bourges and Orléans all boast a wonderful French charm that shouldn’t be missed. When it comes to attractions, your own transport means you can not only admire the Châteaux from afar but get up close and personal to many of them. Although each of every one is beautiful, Château de Chenonceau is perhaps the most visited in the country and so it’s best to get there early to avoid the crowds!

Whatever activities you get up to during your time in the Loire Valley, it is sure to be an unforgettable holiday that will leave you wanting to come back for more!
