This is our final post in our Malta series. Why not take a look at the others?

Village festas take place throughout the summer months all over Malta and Gozo. This makes for quite a lively calendar of events! However, Economy Car Hire have discovered a unique celebration that will make for a very special visit.

Best known as a favourite destination for sun worshippers, scuba divers and lovers of all things historic, Malta draws visitors from all over every year to enjoy its wonderful beaches, sparkling blue sea and quaint seaside towns and villages. But if you’re looking for a slightly different take on this holiday hotspot then look no further than Festa Frawli!

Every year the town of Mgarr comes alive with Festa Frawli. This is a festival celebrating the delicious strawberries that grow in the fields surrounding the town. So forget diving, sunbathing and golf and get stuck in to this deliciously sweet event!

It’s a feast!!

Farmers provide a continuous supply of the juicy red fruits throughout the day to be sold in punnets, as part of fruit salads, dipped in chocolate, whizzed up in milkshakes, and topped with ice cream. Other local delicacies such as strawberry wine and strawberry ravioli are also available alongside traditional Maltese dishes.

It’s a Party!

And the entertainment doesn’t stop there! Visitors and local residents flock from all over the island to enjoy the Folk and Ethnic music. Local Maltese musicians perform throughout the day playing traditional instruments and singing age-old bards and folk songs. Combine this with the accompanying folk dance troupes and the streets are soon buzzing with lively routines that everyone can get involved in!

Other events such as the unveiling of Malta’s largest ever strawberry gateau and a strawberry cupcake competition also take place. Be sure to submit a masterpiece to the painting competition that’s open to all throughout the day!

How do I get there?

Mgarr is just a 25 minute drive from the capital city Valletta, a 15 minute drive from Bugibba and St Paul’s Bay, and a 30 minute drive from Marsaxlokk!

Whilst you are unlikely to encounter any traffic on your journey there, you may have difficulty parking. Roads throughout the centre of the town are closed and pedestrianised for the day.

Visitors are encouraged to use the free park and ride service from Ta’ Qali Millenium Stadium in Attard. The bus journey takes just 10 minutes and drops you right in the central square. Your tickets also double up as raffle tickets so make sure you hold onto them!

Festa Frawli is an island-wide celebration that ensures everyone is personally involved. With music, food and dancing all celebrating Maltese cultural heritage what is there is there not to love?

So, if you fancy getting involved in the festivities simply hop in your hire car and get exploring! Or take a look at our other suggestions for fun things to do in Malta!
