Northern Cyprus Beach

When considering a holiday to Cyprus, our thoughts flock to the likes of ever popular Paphos and Larnaca in the south of the island. As a result North Cyprus, a self-declared state of the Turkish republic, often lies forgotten by many.

Introducing North Cyprus

As with south Cyprus, the north of the island is still surrounded by the tempting turquoise tones of the Mediterranean Sea. It still enjoys scorching sunny days, has remote villages, fabulous panoramas and its own history and monuments. Boasting a completely different, highly likeable personality, it’s surprising that it’s not highly frequented by holidaymakers. This isn’t such a crime, however. In Northern Cyprus, you will find a beautiful, unspoilt and un-commercialised holiday destination.

Explroe Kyrenia

The harmonious harbour city of Kyrenia makes for a great base during your stay. Boasting attractive historical buildings, great beaches, scenic backgrounds and a welcoming atmosphere your time here will be well spent.

The Old Town conceals plenty of secrets. Streets lined with antique stores and designer boutiques will be the extra relish for anyone who enjoys a spot of shopping. For a dose of history, explore Kyrenia Castle which is thought to date back to the 7th century. Compliment your time here with a walk around the shipwreck museum. Outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain biking abound in stunning settings with the wooded Besparmak Mountains lie in easy reach.

Don’t miss Famagusta

Another city that should also feature on your itinerary is to be found in Famagusta. A large walled city, it’s different to anything else you’ll find in the country. It has suffered a turbulent past, evidence of which can still be seen today. The museums provide a genuine insight into the city’s coloured past. A trip to Varosha, a ghost town area that has remained in a time warp since it was fenced off by the Turkish Army, is quite sobering.

That said, Famagusta has recovered and is a thriving city with plenty to be seen and enjoyed. As with Kyrenia, the Old Town is filled with fine historical buildings such as Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (previously known as the Cathedral of St. Nicholas) Northern Cyprus Aerial Shotas well as a variety of other monuments such as Turkish and Roman baths and Orthodox churches. A stroll around will unearth worthy sights on every corner. Nearby beaches Bediz, Glapsides and Nagomi each present fantastic bathing and snorkelling opportunities.

Alternative sights

Outside of the main cities and towns, plenty of enjoyment is waiting to be found. Take off from the mountain tops aboard a paraglide and drink in the bird’s eye views over the green pastures beneath you. North Cyprus is one of the best places in the world to see Sea Turtles. Turtle watching is a unique and unmissable activity. Other ways to experience the beauty of the country is on a 4×4 jeep safari, horseback, by mountain biking and your own two feet. You could of course hire a car in North Cyprus and sample the freedom that car it brings.

Because North Cyprus is separate to the rest of the country, there can be restrictions. As long as you do your research before you travel there, there is no reason that a holiday in North Cyprus can’t be exactly what you are after for your next break away.
