Having recently launched car hire in Belgium, I decided there was no better time to delve into this interesting and varied country in the midst of Western Europe. Surrounded by some of the biggest holiday destinations in the continent, Belgium may often be overlooked. It boasts rolling green countryside, numerous cities which you’ll simply fall in love with and (perhaps somewhat surprisingly) some excellent beaches. With plenty of different breaks in Belgium to choose from, why not travel to Belgium this year?
City Breaks in Belgium
Antwerp, Brussels, Bruges; Belgium is a minefield of culturally interesting and attractive cities. Choosing which one to visit is no easy feat so I recommend touring them all. After all, Belgium is a relatively small country and with a rental car, you can easily fit these fab cities into a 10 day itinerary.
Brussels
Brussels of course is the best known city and being home to Belgium’s major airports, it makes sense to explore this city first. This bustling capital is a centre of activity with plenty to see and do; so much so in fact that it’s tough to know where to begin. One highlight includes the Grand’ Place-Grote Markt, with its offering of historic buildings. The list of museums is never ending with something to suit every taste from the nice comic book museum to the more classic likes of the Art and History Museum and the Natural Sciences Museum. Just a wander around the streets with a Belgian Waffle will be entertainment enough.
Antwerp
Don’t forget Antwerp though, as it too has plenty to offer. It’s nicknamed the “diamond city” as 70% of all diamonds are reportedly traded here and the city certainly does shine! The locals are friendly and the setting relaxed, attractive and interesting; what more could you want from a city break. The classic, historical market square is a great focal point with a variety of other landmarks and attractions to visit such as Ruben’s House and of course the Diamond District, brimming with jewellery stores.
Bruges
Bruges, although not the capital, is a popular option particularly after it shot to fame in the 2008 movie ‘In Bruges’. The city enclosed within protective city walls has a bit of Eastern European flair to it, especially when it comes to the buildings lining the plazas and lovely canals. It’s simply especially picturesque and a joy to explore with numerous highlights from the shopping streets (bursting with chocolate shops) to museums. Be sure to enjoy a boat ride on the canals too.
Beach Breaks in Belgium
With the prevalence of lush beaches in Spain and France, there’s not usually much of a need to look elsewhere for a relaxing beach break. For those among us who prefer to get off the beaten track however, Belgium is an excellent choice. The gateway to the sea may be relatively small but the beaches here are clean, golden and lovely, which makes Belgium a top contender in my books. More often than not, the coastline is fringed by high rise buildings and casinos but it definitely doesn’t detract from the experience!
De Panne Beach
De Panne beach on the northerly stretch of the coastline with its wide expanse of fine sand is a great choice. It is known for being a little windy and you’ll frequently see sand yachting whipping along the waters’ edge. The beach is so wide however that there’ll be no interference; run, play and sunbathe until your hearts’ content here. As an added bonus, there are a number of nature reserves and sand dunes here to discover!
Blankenberge Beach
If you are travelling as a family, Blakenberge is a great shout as it hosts an annual Sand Festival throughout July and August where plenty of awesome sand sculptures are created. A large aquarium is also found here which will provide plenty of entertainment. The beach itself of course is also lovely and the pier will remind you of home!
The Dutch and Germans are already well aware of the perks of a beach break in Belgium so why don’t you come and see Belgium’s lovely coastline for yourself. Hire a car from Bruges and take a drive along the Flanders Coast to find your favourite beach.
Other types of breaks in Belgium
If you want to see a different side to the country however, there are a number of different breaks in Belgium to choose from. Why not unearth the beauty of the local landscapes and embark on a walking holiday; you could opt for a self-guided adventure or join up with a group. Cycling holidays and barge holidays will also open up the country in a different way.
Whichever type of break you choose, car hire in Belgium will allow you to traverse this fantastic country at your own pace and really add a sense of freedom to your trip, even for the odd day or two! One thing is for sure though; this fantastic country has plenty to offer so why not come and explore!
Glad you’ve been inspired Dan 🙂 the beaches in Belgium are definitely a hidden gem, as cliche as it sounds!
I would never previously have considered a beach break in Belgium, but if the above pic is anything to go by, it looks great!
