The Death Valley Scenic Byway is located in one of the most remote parts of California in the USA. It is a land of extremes and takes the title as the hottest, driest and lowest point in North America with 3.3million acres of desert encompassing it. Travelling this unique and dynamic road, you are presented with views of rugged natural beauty that stretch for 80 miles. The scenery incorporates mountains, canyons, sand dunes, dry lake beds that have become salt encrusted and surprisingly even wetlands. With such dramatic scenes to witness and soaring temperatures to take on too, it isn’t a drive you will forget in a hurry.

Braulio Carrillo Highway – Costa Rica

This 157km stretch of tarmac known as Braulio Carrillo Highway, or Highway 32 for short, in Costa Rica is the main road which connects San Jose with the Caribbean and takes you through the beautiful Braulio Carrillo National Park. It is hard to disagree that the route is incredibly scenic, sailing through tunnels and climbing around mountains before emerging into breath taking wilderness. Pray for a clear day when you’re in the mountains and drink in the beauty. Take caution however, the road can sometimes suffers from landscapes and as such is often closed. If the road does happen to be open then you are in luck. The central valleys and highlands in this area are unfortunately often overlooked but this drive most definitely does them justice with truly amazing views over Braulio Carrillo.
