Malta is a stunning island measuring just 316 square KM. It sits in the blue Mediterranean waters between Sicily and the North African coast. It is an island steeped in history dating back to circa 4000BC. With a modest population of just under 500,000 people, the island is cultured, unique and full to the brim of places and sights to explore. We wanted to explore the very best that Malta has to offer that you can see and get to from your hire car. Being such a small island with a small population, public transport options aren’t huge so your own private hire car is the perfect way to explore this Mediterranean gem.

Valletta – Malta’s Capital

The seaport city of Valletta is Malta’s capital and is a stunning city. A 16th Century city built on a gorgeous Peninsula that is steeped in history. The city was originally built by the Knights of St John and was decreed to be a “city built by gentlemen for gentlemen”.

Wherever you go in Valletta you’re sure to come across a ton of history and a ton of beauty. Top of the list is St John’s Co-Cathedral. Built between 1573 and 1578, this stunning piece of architecture was a replacement for the church of St Lawrence in Vittoriosa as the place where knights would gather. The interior was revamped in the 17th century and it shows, every wall, pillar and rib is decorated gorgeous and with an incredible eye of detail.

Once you’re done taking in the stunning architecture, be sure to take a slow relaxed drive to Upper Barrakka gardens. These beautiful gardens sit high above the 16th Century Grand Harbour which not only brings stunning views but also a refreshing cool breeze.

Comino’s Blue Lagoon

Whilst we highly discourage driving your hire car into the blue lagoon, using your hire car to get there is a fantastic idea. The Blue Lagoon is easily the biggest attraction in Comino and it’s so easy to see why.

The deep, powerful blues of the water make it look like you’re staring at the water through a filter and makes it the perfect place to sit and just relax. In the summer though the Blue Lagoon can get extremely busy and at it’s hottest it’s a bit too much as there’s not a ton of shade. Deckchairs and umbrellas are always on hand though if you are after a relaxing time but don’t want to burn.

Mdina – the old capital.

Mdina was the old capital of Malta before Valletta became the capital in 1571. This gorgeous medieval town is walled and sits on the top of a hill in the centre of the island. It’s only home to around 300 people within the walls but is attached to the village of Rabat which is home to around 11,000 people.

The old capital is also filled with gorgeous buildings, from St Paul’s Cathedral to Vilhenna Palace and Mdina Dungeons and Benedictine Monastery, you will not be left wanting for places to explore.

Malta’s stunning beaches.

Malta is known for its beaches. It just is. The island itself being so small lends it’s to a high density of stunning beaches being close together, here’s a mini rundown of these beaches, for our full rundown check out the best beaches in Malta.

The Golden bay

Perfect for swimming, chilling in in the sun or even a beach BBQ. Like the blue lagoon we talked about above, the Golden Bay is prone to getting super busy during peak seasons and the during the hottest days.

Ghajn Teffieha

This gorgeous little spot isn’t too far from the Golden Bay, but it does get less busy that the Golden Bay. Located at the bottom of a steep set of stairs from the car park, the little cove of a beach is truly stunning, the water is blue, and the beach is sandy. It’s a testament to the beauty of nature as the Gaia foundation are constantly ensuring its natural beauty is not ruined.

St Peter’s Pool

Ok this one isn’t a beach but it’s an absolute must see in Malta. This is a flat, rocky outcrop you can find at Delimara point in south west Malta. It has a unique appeal due to the stunning visuals of the blue water gently wrapping against the cool white rock. You can snorkel and swim in the water but be sure to bring your own supplies as this is a remote little gem with no public transport links. Hire car essential .

Malta, located in Southern Europe, is an island country of an archipelago. It’s surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and so benefits from sandy shores and turquoise seas, luring travellers from all around the world.
A European Capital of Culture

What is a European Capital of Culture?

This is a city, or recently cities, named by the European Union who hold the title for a year to organise a series of cultural events. Outcomes for that city include boosted tourism, regeneration of cities, and a raised profile, among other benefits.

The first was named back in 1985 by Greece’s minister of culture who wanted to bring Europeans closer together, highlighting the richness of their cultures and raising awareness of their history and values.

Cities are required to submit a proposal for judging, outlining why they should be awarded the title, against set criteria.

2018 cultural programme

Valletta in Malta, and Leeuwarden-Friesland in the Netherlands, have been named as Capital of Culture for this year.

Malta celebrates the official opening of their cultural programme of events between 14th and 21st January. This contains a week-long series of events held in the capital of Valletta including live music, street artists, exhibitions, and open days of historical spaces.

After this week, the festa will stretch across the island and over to Gozo.

You can check the full programme over here, and bearing this in mind, there’s probably never been a better time to experience Malta. You’ll have a whole new wealth of activities and entertainment at your disposal.

Be sure to also check out our guide for top attractions and things to do in Mdina and Rabat.

What are the best beaches?

Any Mediterranean location is bound to offer some incredible spots for sunsets and sunbathing; Malta is no different. It’s always worth bearing in mind that with any spot popular with tourists and locals is bound to get busier during summertime so be sure to arrive early to avoid disappointment. We list some of the best beaches in Malta below.

Golden Bay
Ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and beach BBQs. Located in the north west of Malta, on the edge of Mellieħa, the conditions make it one of the most popular. Although how busy it gets is a testament to its quality, it’s advisable to travel early in peak times as the beach is sure to fill quickly. The nearby car park makes it easy to reach too so a spectacular sunset is never out of reach. The bay is dotted with inlets and caves, perfect for exploring with a snorkel. It’s Blue Flag certified and has amenities close by, including good restaurants.

Blue Lagoon
Situated on the small island of Comino, which has only a few permanent residents, you’ll need to take a ferry if you’re not staying on the island. Set off from Malta or Gozo to this island in-between the two in search of these light blue clear waters and white sand. The bay consists of two beaches with rocks dividing them. The shallow waters, colourful fish and caves serve a perfect setting for snorkelling. A ban on boats has been put in place to minimise the disruption caused.

Ghajn Tuffieha. Photo by: imagesef/Stock

Għajn Tuffieħa
This Blue Flag beach, near Golden Bay, receives less visitors than its counterpart. Smaller and more untouched than Golden Bay, you’ll need to head down a steep flight of steps (and back up again!) from the car park at the top of the cliffs to indulge here. You’ll find only basic facilities which add to the ruggedness of the area. The beach is often peaceful and uncrowded but will see an increase in visitors in peak season. The area is managed by the Gaia Foundation who ensure its natural beauty remains untarnished and well-kept.

Mellieħa Bay
For about 50 metres out to sea, the water remains shallow, and there’s no underwater current so the conditions are perfect for those with young children. There are lots of activities available here to be taken advantage of, including windsurfing, kite surfing, canoeing, and water-skiing. This Bay is Malta’s longest beach, wading in at 800 metres long and boasts another Blue Flag award. There are lots of facilities available, so you’ll find it easy to spend a day here. If you get bored of the golden shore (it could happen), the Ghadira Nature Reserve is across the road; a seven-hectare reserve of in-land wetlands making it a haven for birds and other wildlife.

Ramla I-Hamra (Ramla Bay)
Rocky cliffs surround this long and wide beach, offering some shelter. Some facilities are available, and the area is best reached by car. There are a few underwater rocks, but these can be spotted upon approach. For incredible scenery, considering taking a coastal walk to either side of the bay.

Paradise Bay. Photo by: Igor Kolos/Stock

Paradise Bay
This does exactly what it says on the tin. You’ll find a rugged landscape and beautiful views contained in this natural cove. Although the beach is smaller than others, its popular for beach parties. Jellyfish nets have been put in place to protect swimmers, but you can snorkel just past these. There’s a car park situated at the top of the cliffs which means a descent down steep steps which not all may manage. Sunbathe here and you’ll be taking in a view of the islands Gozo and Comino. The surrounding area is ideal for hiking, so a day can be wiled away at ease.

Imġiebaħ Bay
This area isn’t the easiest to get to, but it’s worth the effort if you can make it. This small sandy beach rarely gets busy because it’s tucked out of the way and is relatively undisturbed. Located in the north of Malta, you’ll need to head towards Selmun Palace. Unconfident drivers should park here and make the rest of the way on foot. The road leading to the beach was never designed for two-way traffic so if you continue in the car, be prepared to spend some time reversing if you meet on-coming traffic. Once near the shore, you’ll have to make a trek down the cliff-face. The journey won’t be suitable for everyone. There’s no facilities so take plenty of water. Be vigilant for strong currents in the water as there’s no lifeguard on duty.

St Peter’s Pool
Technically this isn’t a beach, so we’ll list it last. You’ll find no sand here but the available flat rocky outcrop near Marsaxlokk, at Delimara Point (South West Malta) still retains a unique appeal. Ladders from the rocks allow access to the waters below where you can snorkel after some time spent sunbathing. The area is popular among locals, but the lack of sand affects the number of tourists that visit. It’s in a remote location and has no facilities which perhaps makes it less appealing. However, if you’re prepared to take your own supplies (ensure you have enough drinking water) and you’re looking to get away to a picturesque spot, you should consider this natural pool. No public transport operates nearby so be sure to book a hire car.

St Peter’s Pool.
Top tips to bear in mind when visiting beaches in Malta

Stick to any marked swimmer’s zones as there are sometimes strong underwater currents.

You should never swim alone, especially in an area known for strong currents.

Use sunblock (perhaps common sense but we all forget at times!). It’s advised by the Maltese authorities to stay out of the sun when its strongest between 11am and 4pm because of high UV. Read up on our tips on how to protect your skin from the sun when on holiday, which includes information on what UV rays are and how they affect our skin.

Although there may be parking attendants at some of the locations above who request gratuities, you don’t have to pay these if you don’t think they’ve helped you. Some attendants may be pushy, but if you think they’ve earned a tip then you can leave a euro.

Avoid leaving any valuables on display while you’re on the beach, or in your hire car. While petty theft is rare in Malta, there is the odd case. Check out our tips for protecting your rental car from thieves.

Public nudity in Malta is illegal so refrain from taking all your clothes off while you’re sunbathing. There are certain beaches where this is relaxed. It’s also frowned upon for men to enter shops or restaurants with a bare chest, no matter how hot it is.

Pay attention to any beach flags on display. A green flag shows that the water is safe to enter while a yellow flag signals that there’s low danger and some caution should be exercised. A red flag means danger, so you shouldn’t enter the water. A double red flag means extreme danger and in these conditions, lifeguards aren’t required to enter the water. If you enter the sea when there’s a double red flag displayed, don’t think you’re guaranteed help from them if you get into trouble.

What’s a Blue Flag status beach?

These beaches have met a set list of requirements which deems them a higher quality. For example, they might have a lifeguard presence, the safety flag system in place, emergency equipment and facilities such as toilets and showers etc.

Previously loved in February 2012 as ‘5 Things to See and Do in Malta’, zest added in 2017…

The Mediterranean island of Malta features highly on many of our bucket lists; the appeal of the azure sea and year round sunshine is hard to abate. Aside from fantastic outdoor activities and wonderful beaches, there is also an abundance of history to be found on the island. To help you choose how to spend your time in Malta, in no particular order, here’s our pick of 10 things to see and do.

Blue Lagoon, Comino. Photo by: twindesigner/Adobe Stock

1. Walk Along Dingli Cliffs

The Dingli Cliffs are an impressive sight, especially from the water on a boat cruise. One of the best ways to experience them however is a walk along the top of the cliffs; enjoy the view of the village of Dingli on the left hand side and views over the uninhabited island of Filfla. Come here in the evening for the charming atmosphere and stunning sunsets.

2. Fort Rinella

Dating back to 1878, Fort Rinella is one of the top historical sites in Malta. Home to one of only two surviving Armstrong 100-tonne guns, the fort is quite famous. With period-dressed volunteers on hand to answer all of your questions, a visit here will take you back in history, more so if you join one of the guided tours. The tour will begin with the firing of the cannon plus a live demonstration of how the fort would have been defended during an attack. With plenty more displays and hands-on activities in this interesting and informative environment, everyone will enjoy this activity.

3. The Three Cities

Across the Grand Harbour from Valletta you will find Cottonera where the Three Cities; Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua, lay. Here you can gain an intriguing insight into the island and its history. Each has a unique charm and character that you will struggle to find elsewhere in Malta. There is plenty to see and do during your visit; why not first stop by at Bishop’s Palace built in 1542 and then visit the Maritime Museum. The Safe Haven Gardens are nice to see as well.

Wied il Mielah Window, Gharb. Photo by: Hans Debruyne/Adobe Stock

4. Mdina

Mdina is the old capital of Malta and a visit should feature within your ‘To Do’ list. The medieval walled town sits atop a hill in the centre of the island and houses a population of around 300 residents within the walls. It is however attached to the village of Rabat which has a population of 11,000. A visit here is a must. Come to see the fantastic buildings from St Paul’s Cathedral to Vilhenna Palace, not forgetting the Mdina Dungeons and the Benedictine Monastery.

5. Gozo

No visit to Malta is complete without hopping aboard a ferry and visiting the neighbouring island of Gozo. Gozo is a little unique slice of heaven and is varied enough for a day trip or a longer stay. There is a selection of picturesque towns and villages dotted across the island each offering something a little different. You won’t tire of things to do on the island with activities ranging from diving and snorkelling in the surrounding waters to shopping or cycling. Near the site of the former Azure Window is the Blue Hole, an extremely popular diving location.

6. The Wied il-Mielah Window

Although the famous Azure Window is no more, the alternative natural-formed marble arch is worthy of a visit. Located on the north-west coast of Gozo, a road from the village of Gharb will take you directly there. It’s possible to even enter the Window because the arch is still quite thick.

7. Ggantija Temples

These two prehistoric temples are located on Gozo. One boasts being the oldest stone structure in the world- older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids. The temples are said to have been built in 24 hours by a female giant called Sunsuna. It’s believed they were a place for pilgrimage, dedicated to the Great Earth Mother, and once housed an oracle who would have visions of the future. Visit for yourself to contemplate just how these structures were built and their significance.

Traditional Maltese dghajsa bobbing in Malta’s Grand Harbour. Photo by: David Woolfenden/Adobe Stock

8. Learn more about Malta itself

In the old capital, Mdina, is the 18th century Magisterial Palace of Justice which houses the National Museum of Natural History. The palace alone is impressive but the various displays are sure to interest all ages, including some great fossils and information on the national bird (Blue Rock Trush) and national plant (Maltese Centaury), among many more.

There’s also the Museum of Archaeology in Gozo, illustrating the cultural history of the island. It boasts some incredible relics, including some found at the Ggantija Temples.

The Malta at War Museum in Vittoriosa tells the dark tale of Malta throughout the World War 2 includes a tour of the underground World War 2 shelter. The Lascaris War Rooms are also worth a visit.

9. Grand Harbour Cruise

Take a water tour in a traditional wooden Maltese dghajsa. Where a thousand of these boats once floated, now only a handful remain so a trip is a must while you can. Purchase your ticket from Valletta or Vittoriosa.

10. Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

This is an absolutely incredible experience. Once an underground cemetery thought to hold around 7000 bodies, artefacts found here have been dated back to 4000BC. Visit to see the only examples of prehistoric paintings to be found on Malta.

Book car hire to explore all the highlights of Malta

Economy Car Hire have come up with a list of our top 5 alternative beaches to visit in Malta for those who are looking for something a bit more relaxed and a little less lively.

Malta and its sister islands Gozo and Comino may be small in size but they certainly pack a punch with holidaymakers. The popular destination attracts sun worshippers, historians and extreme sportsmen alike and they all gravitate towards the beach. However, with a rocky shoreline stretching round most of the Maltese coast its main sandy beaches, such as Mellieha and Golden Bay, can become busy and overcrowded.

Ghajn Tuffieha

One of the most unspoiled beaches in Malta, Ghajn Tuffieha can be found in the north west part of Malta. It is in fact one of the three beaches that form the Golden Bay chain. This particular beach can only be accessed by a flight of 200 stone steps down the cliff. While the descent/ascent may put off some visitors, the peaceful atmosphere creates a much coveted relaxing environment. Sun loungers and parasols are available once you reach the beach. There is also a small snack bar meaning you have the benefit of all the amenities without the crowds. Enjoy the day soaking up the sun and bathing in the shallow waters. Ghajn Tuffieha is also a fantastic spot for spectacular sunset views and is well worth hanging around for.

Mgarr ix- Xini

Although small, this beach certainly doesn’t lack in beauty or tranquillity. Set in a deep valley it is accessible by car and is one of the most secluded beaches in Gozo. Be warned it is a pebbly beach so you may want to come prepared with something comfortable to sit on. The stunning clear waters and little caves and high rocks on either side of the bay make it a great spot for swimming, snorkelling and even diving. The entrance to this charming cove is guarded by a 17th century tower and it also marks the start of a pretty walk along a restored ancient pathway down to the beach.

St Peter’s Pool

St Peter’s Pool is without a doubt one of Malta’s hidden gems. Located near Marsaxlokk this stunning natural pool is a local secret and the perfect spot to spend a relaxing day away from busy crowds and the more touristy spots. The pool is surrounded by flat rocks which warmed by the sun are perfect for sunbathing whilst the pool itself is crystal clear and ideal for snorkelling. Be sure to pack a picnic as there aren’t any facilities here; however its seclusion is genuinely a part of its charm.

Blue Lagoon, Comino

Be sure to take the ferry over to Comino, and spend the day exploring the wonders of the Blue Lagoon. This stunning bay has two white sandy beaches to choose from surrounded by large rocks which make great sunbeds as well as the perfect perch from which to leap into the crystal clear waters. With its shallow waters make it perfect for swimming, and with the lagoon’s startlingly blue waters, colourful fish and caves to explore it’s also a great snorkelling spot. Arrive early in the morning to bag the best spot!

Ramala Bay, Gozo

Ramala Bay is a Gozo’s largest beach and famous for its unique bright orange and red coloured sand. Combined with the stunning blue clear water of the Mediterranean this beach is certainly the most striking one! The curving bay is set at the bottom of a valley of unspoilt countryside and with wild rocky headlands at either end it comes as no surprise that this beach is renowned for its natural beauty. Despite being well known, the sheer size of the beach means it never feels over crowded even during the busy summer months. Soak up the sun, bathe in the shallow waters or if you fancy a bit of exploring, make the climb up to Calypso’s Cave where legend has it Odysseus spent seven years holed up with the temptress Calypso. The spot also offers stunning views.

Gozo is also one of our favourite places to stay. If however you would like to spend your holiday in Malta, have a look at our guide to the best spots to stay on the island.

So, it seems fair to say that there is a lot more to the Maltese coast than busy beaches, burger vans and endless rows of sun loungers. Simply hop in your hire car to better explore what the islands have to offer!

Don’t forget to leave a comment if you have any beach recommendations for Malta, we’d love to hear from you!

The capital city of Malta, despite its incredibly compact size is hailed to be one of the most concentrated historic areas the world over by UNESCO. The fantastic 16th century architecture and historical fortifications found within the borders of Valletta are proof of this. Explorations of the narrow back streets and bustling Grand Harbour will be time well spent. If it’s your first trip to Malta, start with a visit to the Malta Experience. It is the perfect half-hour introduction to not only the city, but Malta as a whole. It gives you an overview of the history and culture that is yet to be experienced.

Dig a little deeper

You would be forgiven for bypassing St John’s Co-Cathedral. The exterior is vastly unremarkable and will blend in easily with the surrounding buildings. Keep your eyes peeled as the interior more than makes up for it. Upon entering, follow the audio guide provided. This will dictate the best route to follow. Although not particularly well known, the grandeur within renders it one of the most impressive cathedrals in Europe. The museum is an added bonus.

Visit Parliament

The Grand Masters Palace, the current office of the Maltese President and Houses of Parliament is another note-worthy site, although access is limited. When parliament is not in session, visitors can explore the Palace and the State Rooms which contain an impressive collection of armour. It hosts one of the largest collections in the world, as well as intricate tapestries. Grand and beautiful it’s a winner for anyone with an appreciation for architecture. The National Library is found just next door. Access is limited and you will need photo ID to enter but it’s worth popping into to this old, large building complete with old and authentic rickety, wooden cabinets.

Don’t miss Casa Rocca Piccola

The last absolute must-see of Valletta’s buildings is Casa Rocca Piccola. It was built in the late 16th century for Admiral and Knight of Malta, Don Pietro La Rocca. Some of the country’s most famous families called it home. It’s now privately owned and visitors can tour the 50 perfect rooms. Learn about the history, and visit the series of underground tunnels too. Some of which were greatly used during World War II. Casa Rocca Piccola is filled with fantastic treasures and a beauty that shows it has really stood the test of time.
