The modestly sized country of Slovenia may be small on land mass, but not much else. Thanks perhaps to the fact that it borders an impressive four different countries, (Italy, Austria, Croatia, and Hungary) Slovenia embraces the diverse mix of cultures of both Western Europe and the Slavic nation-states of Eastern Europe. Slovenia has some of Europe’s most beautiful landscapes too, ranging from the snowy peaks of the Alps, across plains and down to the coastline of the Adriatic Sea.

The beauty of Lake Bled

Lake Bled is one of the best-known tourist attractions in Slovenia. The beautiful clear waters of Lake Bled encompass a tiny island on which a small church is surrounded by trees. Encircling the lake are steep forested hills, atop of one sits an ancient castle, this truly is a land of fairy tales. Tourists visit the area to row across the still waters of the lake; make full use of the hilly trails and their activities, along with enjoying the jaw-dropping views from the mountain peaks.

Introducing Lake Bohinj

The popularity of Lake Bled is quite possibly partly to blame for Lake Bohinj’s gradual increase in popularity. Despite being only a 30 minute drive away from Bled, lake holidays to Bohinj, on the edge of Triglav National Park, remain the less popular of the two. That is likely to change. Even the approach to Bohinj through the spectacular canyon of Sava Bohinjka is an experience in itself. The intensely steep, green and wooded hills open up to views over the largest lake in Slovenia. The peace and quiet that encapsulates the natural beauty of Triglav National Park brings serenity to all who visit.

Things to see and do

There are activities to suit all in Bohinj; from those seeking relaxation and tranquillity to adrenaline junkies, all are catered for in one of the world’s most stunning landscapes. Luxurious hotels offer wellness, beauty, and spa treatments while cable cars can whisk you up to 1,000m for more active hikes and bike rides. There’s a great height still to climb though, as the highest peaks are a staggering 2,864m. Guided tours on horseback, by steam train, or even by boat are available. The lake facilitates activities such as canoeing as well as swimming, wind surfing and sailing. For something a little more extreme; canyoning, rock climbing, tandem paragliding, white-water rafting, kayaking and hydrospeed (riverboarding) may be more of interest.

The vast range of activities on offer at Lake Bohinj certainly make it a worthy contender to rival the ever popular Lake Bled. With the two only being half an hour’s drive apart, why not visit both on a trip here.
