Thankfully, the approach of winter doesn’t herald the uprising of the whitewalkers for us. There are certain locations on earth that are fortunate to have almost 365 days of sunshine. England isn’t one of them. As the winter approaches, so do the early dark nights and adverse weather conditions. Many people prefer this season for holidaying abroad as it offers a great escape to somewhere with nicer weather where you can enjoy winter sun. It can also mean missing peak season and the main tourist rush.

Canary Islands
The islands, located across the sea from Morocco, are well-situated for year-round sun. Temperatures average in the low-mid 20s all year round and you face a low risk of plans being hampered by rain. Basing yourself in the south or south-east of any of the islands will give you a better shot at a better climate than if you were staying in the north. To reduce the chances of facing rain, pick one of the less mountainous islands, such as Fuerteventura or Lanzarote. You might find yourself needing a jacket in the evenings wherever you are, but you can leave the duffel coat at home.
On Tenerife, you’ll be able to walk along the beach whatever time of year you’re visiting. In the winter months, you’re bound to find one quiet and secluded, bypassing the tourist crush of the summer season. Visit the Loro Parque Zoo or climb Mount Teide- listed as one of our top locations for stargazing.
The rugged terrain of Gran Canaria also makes for great exploring out of the sweltering heat of summer. The mix of environments offer a range of possibilities; the beaches, the desert-like areas, and the tropical-looking Palmitos Park. There are also plenty of golf courses on offer.

Volcanic Fuerteventura is also a great base for treks in the cooler months but still offers some fantastic scenery under the clear skies. For beaches, hit Sotavento Beach for its uninterrupted 17 miles of sand. It can get quite windy so it has a massive appeal for those doing water-sports such as kite surfing. Take the climb to the top of the Gairia Volcano for incredible views from one of the largest volcanoes on the island.
Lanzarote has great resort areas with well-developed amenities and even luxury properties for larger budgets. The waters are great for surfing towards the end of the year when the waves reach their peak. Timanfaya National Park can be fully explored, whereas in the summer months you might not make it so far under the heat.
Cyprus
There are lots of fabulous beaches in Cyprus, and we covered some previously that can be found in the Paphos area. These remain in a great climate to be explored throughout the year. Although the Mediterranean may be chilly for swimming this time of year, the sun makes frequent appearances. There also lots to be discovered in-land, such as the Troodos Mountains, with its skiing opportunities, archaeological sites, and incredible vineyards. Madeira
Experiencing mild weather year-round, you’ll benefit from the dolphin and whale spotting possibilities. Hiking is another option here, with a climb to the top of Pico do Arieiro on the cards for great views. It’s the third highest peak on the island and, should you want to skip the trek on foot, you can take your hire car up there. In the winter months, the peak becomes covered in snow and locals flock to build snowmen. It’s also possible to continue northwards, depending on weather conditions, to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak.
Malta
Benefitting from a location between Sicily and north Africa, there’s mild weather throughout the winter months. Outside the tourist crush is a perfect time for history buffs to get under the skin of Malta. That’s the best time to visit all the fantastic museums and key sites of historical interest. Sri Lanka
With a tropical climate, Sri Lanka has incredible palm-tree framed beaches with white sand. Take the climb to the ruined ancient city of Sigiriya or visit Udawalawe National Park. You’ll be in with a chance of spotting wild elephants or the Sri Lankan leopard. Monsoon season arrives between October and February for the east coast and north of the country. December to March sees the dry season for the south-west. December to mid-April sees visitors peak along with the climate.
Australia
Summertime runs from December to February in Australia, so the polar opposite to ours. Parts of Western Australia are largely uninhabited so you’re bound to find a quiet spot away from the crowds. However, be aware of their wet season which peaks in December. Between November and March is the main nesting period for turtles. There’s also options for diving or snorkelling. Perth reaches its highest temperature in February and gets on average 9 hours of sunshine a day. Tasmania is also a great for beaches, art galleries, restaurants and wilderness areas.
