Summer is approaching and with it, Euro 2016. Great news for some, a nightmare for others. With this in mind we’ve come up with our tips to help you avoid Euro 2016, whether you’re at home or abroad.

England

If you’re planning a staycation, there are plenty of ways to hide from the football.

England’s group games are on Saturday 11th June, Thursday 16th June, and Monday 20th June. The 16th is the big one, that’s when we play Wales. The match is on at 3pm, so if you’re at work, you’ll probably miss it anyway!

Consider a break in the Highlands or Dartmoor. There are a growing number of off the grid holiday properties such as Courtney, a safari tent in Cornwall or Idaho Cabin in Sussex. In secluded spots, these types of breaks are perfect for those seeking solitude.

There are plenty of events to enjoy in the south east too. These include:

Magna Carta 800 River Relay

Where: Runnymede, Berkshire
When: June 13th-14th
What: A river pageant along the Thames celebrating the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta. It’s free to watch and viewing points can be found along the Thames Path around Runnymede. More information.

Royal Ascot

Where: Ascot, Surrey
When: June 14th-18th
What: One of the highlights of the racing calendar, 2016 is bound to be another fantastic year. If you’re thinking of going, make your decision soon as tickets are selling fast. More information.

Wimbledon

Euro 2016 - Visit Wimbledon insteadPhoto by: ramirezom/Fotolia

Where: Wimbledon, London
When: June 27th-July 10th
What: The 130th edition of the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. Whilst the ballot has now taken place, you can still sign up for returns, daily tickets, or get in the queue at Gate 3. More information.

Top tip!

If you don’t like football, it’s best to avoid parts of France this summer as they’re hosting the tournament. If you are visiting France for Euro 2016 however, don’t forget to hire a car.

Countries to visit to miss Euro 2016

If you’re looking for a holiday location where the football isn’t the biggest event in town, why not consider one of these destinations?

Netherlands

One of Europe’s footballing superpowers, the Netherlands failure to qualify was a huge shock. This will be a good time to head to explore the canals and villages of the countryside.

Denmark

Normally regular attendees, Denmark won’t be at the party this year. This summer is the perfect time to take the kids to Billund to visit Legoland. Alternatively, take a trip to the Faroe Islands! Beautiful scenery, friendly people, and isolation combine to offer a truly unique experience.

Norway

Head to Norway this summer and visit the Lofoten Islands. They’re truly spectacular and rival the fjords for the title of Norway’s most beautiful landscape.

Greece

Winners in 2004, Greece have failed to qualify this year. Make your way to Corfu, Crete, Lesvos, or Mykonos for great weather and food and a warm welcome.

Malta

There are plenty of festivals on both Malta and Gozo through June. For example, Għanafest (June 10th-12th), is a huge music festival focusing on traditional Maltese folk music and heritage.

Any other tips?

Remember, Euro 2016 only lasts a few weeks. The positive, festival style atmosphere that it creates in England can make it fun, even for those who aren’t football fanatics. Share your tips for missing the football below.
