The Caribbean is the place of dreams. A place where the twinkling blue ocean wave hello to the bright white sands. I’m sure most of us wouldn’t be picky as to which of the 2,000 plus islands we set foot on. Saint Martin, or Sint Maarten, is regarded as one of the best Caribbean islands to visit. It frequently comes out as number one on popularity lists. Renowned for its world-class beaches, excellent food, a variety of hotels to suit all budgets, not to mention plenty of activities and even top notch shopping, it’s an island for everyone.

Divided into two

Interestingly, the island is divided by two nations; France and the Netherlands. The main city on the Dutch side is Philipsburg where you will find a spattering of casino hotels and plenty of nightlife. The exceedingly French town of Marigot on the other side of the island has a much more relaxed aura about it. With plenty of duty free retail therapy on offer and some fantastic French Creole bistros to tempt your tastebuds.

Saint Martin – soak up the sunshine

When it comes to things to do, a lot of focus is centred on the unbeatable Caribbean beaches. Don’t forget and the rich variety of water sports that the surf encourages. The majority of beaches are quite uncrowded so you can enjoy your little slice of heaven with barely any interruption; bliss!

The eastern beaches, particularly Coconut Grove, Orient Beach and Dawn Beach are a haven for windsurfing. Whether you are a beginner or a self-professed pro. Dive in and delight in the amazingly clear water when you’re snorkelling or diving. Test your balance aboard some water skis. Jet skis are great fun for all ages too. They’re a fun introduction to water sports if you’re just beginning to dip your toes in the water.

A spot of pampering

An island that’s perfect for rest and relaxation too, it’s easy to seek a little pampering! The many spas across the island mean it’s tempting to escape reality for a while. Some with endless infinity pools to lose yourself in, others offering a myriad of treatments and luxurious massages. Heaven!

Beyond the facade

Be sure to set aside some time to explore the outside wonders of Saint Martin. With a varied ecosystem encompassing everything from tropical rainforests to volcanic backgrounds there is plenty of natural beauty to be appreciated. Why not embark on a horse riding trek at the Seaside Nature Park; not only enjoy the ride but learn about the plant and animal life that live there. If that doesn’t appeal, perhaps take a relaxing walk or for a bit more action, hop on a mountain bike and explore further afield. Other sports to enjoy include tennis and even golf at the 18-hole championship course at Philipsburg.

Where else can you combine a taste of the Netherland and France whilst soaking up the beautiful Caribbean sun? The answer is nowhere; Saint Martin is one of a kind and should definitely feature on your travel wish list.
