Travel and food go hand in hand together; the world is a pretty big place and there are so many fantastic cuisines to sample with plenty of fusions along the way. That said, the number of restaurants in the world spirals well into hundreds of thousands so it’s impossible for us to provide a definitive list; that’s why we’ve compiled our pick of the very best restaurants in the world from the World’s 50 Best Restaurant winners. Most of us will never get the chance to visit them, but it’s nice to dream …
El Celler de Can Roca
Girona, Spain
Run by three brothers, El Celler de Can Roca restaurant in Girona consistently receives 5 star ratings by customers. The food is of course of excellent standard and is creatively presented, pairing imaginative flavours and combinations with the perfect wines; a method which has earned the restaurant its 3 Michelin Stars. It’s not every day eating that’s for sure, but a luxury dining experience. The three brothers featured in the UK series of Masterchef at the end of 2011 when the three finalists in the competition were asked to cook for them.
Per Se
New York, USA
There are more than 20,000 restaurants in New York City but Per Se has been named the very best by New York Times Magazine. With such accolades it’s naturally very expensive, with diners usually given the choice of two tasting menus containing 9 different dishes, which costs a whopping $295 per person! Reviews mention the fine attention to detail, fantastic service with wondrous presentation and of course taste. All of this and with no apparent pretentiousness; what more could you want.
Dinner by Heston Blumenthal
London, UK
Heston Blumenthal, is a 3 star Michelin chef and the owner of the highly acclaimed Fat Duck restaurant (which has received 10/10 every year since 2007 by The Good Food Guide.) Following that success, there’s a new kid on the block; a restaurant in London, simply named Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. Dishes here are inspired by historic British recipes and he worked extensively with historians before opening the restaurant at the start of 2011. In keeping with Heston’s well known eclectic style, the food is nothing short of excellent.
Arzak
San Sebastian, Spain
San Sebastian on the north coast of Spain was recently named the best place in the world for foodies by ‘Which?’ and boasts more Michelin Stars per head than elsewhere else. As such, it is no surprise that Arzak, one of the city’s primary restaurants, should feature here. It is run by a father and daughter team who take classic Spanish dishes and transform them to new heights of excellence. Example dishes include Monkfish with gooseberries or stuffed sweet peppers, with plenty more on offer for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Service and presentation are key assets to the restaurant’s success.
Which of these restaurants do you think would be your ideal dining experience? Or would you choose a different restaurant?
