Greece has had a bit of a rough ride over the past two years. We are all aware of the battering their economy has taken and that, along with social unrest, has likely put you off going on holiday there.

You don’t need to fear any longer though!

Greece is in the midst of a staggering revival and there’s no better time to head here to unlock the charms of the gorgeous Grecian mainland. Put your woes aside and rediscover a country that is brimming with delectable cuisine, ancient treasures and of course unfaltering sunshine. Need further persuasion? Take a look at these 5 reasons to put Greece back on your bucket list!

Eating Greek food

Like many people, food is one of my favourite things and that’s why I think one of the best things about a holiday to Greece is the delicious food. From stuffed vine leaves to feta salads, moussaka to baklava It won’t be hard to locate a traditional taverna, where you can gorge yourself silly, get merry on ouzo and stomp your feet to classic Greek music!

Lazing on gorgeous Greek beaches

With an unlimited choice of stunning Greek Islands floating just offshore, the mainland isn’t often considered for its coastal offerings but it definitely has some top picks. Golden sands and clear waters beckon and with temperatures hitting the 20°Cs (70°F), the beaches of Greece are as a good as any to spend a relaxing day or two before heading off to uncover what else is on offer.

Unearthing ancient history

Ancient Greece has long captured our imagination and whilst there are hundreds of ruins and staggering historical examples across the islands and beyond, the real treasure chest of delights can be found on the mainland. Start your explorations off with a bang and travel to the infinitely impressive Parthenon on Acropolis. Dedicated to Goddess Athena, it dates to 447BC and is easily one of the most iconic sights in the whole of Europe; be sure to cross it off your bucket list.

Meteora; a series of six monasteries piled on top of huge sandstone pillars is easily one of the most astonishing sights in Greece. The name means ‘suspended in the air’ and they date to the 14th century. Although not quite as old as other attractions, they are still a fascinating historical site located in central Greece. The Delphi Theatre is another of the best known attractions and one that will transport you back in time like no other.

Exploring the beautiful wilderness of Greece

With the spotlight shining on the likes of Corfu and Mykonos, there are many little known delights waiting to be uncovered across the mainland. So, what can you do? Hire a car, get out there and uncover them for a truly unique trip. Vouraikos Gorge, close to the picturesque town of Kalavrita is just one example. Drive here then hop on the Odontotos rack railway and amble your way from the coast to the mountains through ravines and past plunging cliffs. Lake Kerkini, close to the Bulgarian border, is another haven for nature lovers boasting an incredible variety of flora and fauna. The options are endless though; discover national parks, the wine regions and more!

Wander around traditional towns and villages

Of course the biggest cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki have plenty on offer but it’s worth exploring further afield to discover the smattering of towns and villages which dust the Grecian countryside. It’s hard to pick out the best because each and every one has its own unique charm that you should really experience during a holiday to Greece. For starters why not visit Livadia, which is easy to find on the route between Athens and Delphi. The village of Ilia, nicknamed the most beautiful village on earth is another not to be missed with its rich history and cobbled streets.

Despite the recent problems, Greece is still one of the most popular countries in the world, so don’t let past events turn you away from visiting this Mediterranean gem. The holiday season is alive and kicking well into the middle of October so book yourself a last minute break and soak up the rays in gorgeous Greece…
