Thought you needed the beach to enjoy a holiday abroad? Think again with my pick of 5 lovely landlocked countries! They will be sure to have your heart singing with their fantastic culture, gorgeous scenery and variety of attractions to enjoy…
Luxembourg
Blockaded on all sides, Luxembourg is a tiny spit of a country, the second smallest Member State of the EU in fact, slapped onto the side of Belgium. It’s played a significant role in Europe’s history but when it comes to holiday destinations it seems to take more of a back seat. That is definitely a good thing though; with rolling hills, fertile valleys and craggy mountains creating a dramatic backdrop, a holiday here is a fairytale waiting to happen and you don’t have to share it! Unearth the mysterious charms of historic castles, tackle the spider web of hiking and biking trails and wander around the self-titled capital city! Home to a surprisingly diverse population and a vibrant charm, Luxembourg is a pint sized place with plenty of potential.
Switzerland
The stunning terrain of Switzerland more than over compensates for its lack of coastline. The mixture of towering mountains to plunging valleys and crystal clear lakes to world class ski resorts ensures that there is never a dull moment here. The cities of Zurich and Geneva are renowned for their classy vibes with captivating Old Towns which burst with clean but chicly rustic historic buildings. The various chocolate factories and cheese fondue restaurants are the perfect addition to any trip here too. There’s no finer way to experience Switzerland than by road, where winding tarmac cuts through mountain passes with staggering views! Out of season, the ski resorts become outdoor adventure playgrounds for all ages so be sure to set out and explore the variety of activities available from golf to rock climbing and so much more! You definitely don’t need a bucket and spade to enjoy a holiday here.
Hungary
Growing and growing in popularity, Hungary is definitely one of Eastern Europe’s biggest hits. The capital Budapest is much of the reason for this; combining eastern and western influences, this city somehow manages to captures everyone’s affection. The food is good, prices are cheap and there is plenty to see and do; be sure to include a boat trip on the Danube River and visit to a local spa in your plans. Outside of the capital, the countryside plays host to all types of activity holidays with cycling excursions proving a great way to explore the variety of smaller towns and cities speckling the horizon. Canoeing and horse riding are also great ways to get around and soak up this culturally rich country, plus, an activity holiday means there’s no excuse not to stop to enjoy the popular wine regions!
Czech Republic
Most people know of the Czech Republic for one reason these days; the capital city of Prague which has earned a reputation as a Stag Do destination in recent years. Whilst this may be the case, don’t let it deter you from travelling to one of Europe’s very best historic cities. To wander around the cobbled streets of the Old Town truly is to step back in time with exceptionally well preserved buildings and a great dose of local culture. The prices are cheap too and with plenty to see and do, you won’t need to worry about choosing the best things to visit; you can see it all! Elsewhere in the country on the other hand, the many spa towns, monasteries, mysterious castles and beautiful mountainous backdrops will leave you wondering where on earth to begin!
Serbia
Now, Serbia is certainly one for those who like to get off the beaten track. I don’t know if it’s just me, but when I think of Serbia, I immediately think of cold weather! The good news however is that whilst that may be the case in winter, at this time of year, it’s as hot, hot, hot as anywhere else in Europe and equally as beautiful I hasten to add. This Balkan state, completely surrounded by no less than 8 neighbouring countries, has plenty up its sleeve with beautiful yet extremely varied panoramas to unearth. The capital Belgrade boasts a lively and friendly vibe with a warming blend of old and new buildings and wonderful places to relax. It’s definitely worth a visit for a slightly different destination!
