London
Renowned for its spectacular NYE fireworks, London is an ideal choice, particularly as the show is free! For this reason, the display is exceptionally popular so you are best to head down to the South Bank lining the Thames as early as you can during the day in order to claim your spot! Having celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and playing host to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in the summer, you can be sure that this year’s fireworks display will be even better than usual to cap a successful and memorable year!
Tokyo
Can’t wait for the 31st? Head to Tokyo where the celebrations kick off on 29th December! The usual fireworks will light up the sky but there are also other ways to mark the stroke of midnight; at Zojoji Temple, thousands of balloons with wishes attached to them are released into the night and there are many countdown parties across the city. Many of the locals leave the city during this time to spend the holidays with their family and you will find that some of the major tourist attractions close, but there is plenty going on and a great atmosphere to enjoy!
