The winter season is a great time to enjoy a holiday with your family, particularly around the Christmas period when schools take a break of up to two weeks and some companies operate a mandatory shutdown. This year, instead of spending your days cooped up in the house, why not get the best from the opportunity and enjoy some quality time with your family on a winter holiday. There are still a good few weeks to go and plenty of great deals available so here are 3 family winter holiday ideas that could offer the perfect winter holiday for you this year…

Paris in winter

Disneyland Paris, France

A holiday in Euro Disney can be the best of both worlds for a family; a few days immersed in the Parisian culture of the French capital and a few days where the kids (and big kids alike) can get lost in the magical world of Disney!

Taunt the kids with snails and frog legs when out to dinner in Paris and scale the Eiffel Tower for amazing views over the city. At Disneyland itself, rest your head in fairytale hotels, meet Mickey, Minnie and all your favourite Disney characters, scream until you lose your voice on the many rides and watch the sky light up with the buzz, bang and crackle of colourful fireworks. It is sure to be an unforgettable trip!

Remember that France does experience similar weather to the UK, but with the park decorated to the nines at Christmas time it’s all the more magical and you’ll soon forget the chill in the air!

The Algarve, Portugal

If you are after a cheap escape from the drab UK winter weather then the Algarve is a perfect choice for a family winter holiday. The Algarve is well known for its balmy year round temperatures and is practically guaranteed to deliver day time highs of anywhere from 17°C -20°C and hotter in the sun during December and January, with the juxtaposed palm trees dressed in Christmas twinkling lights. With local businesses enjoying a respite from the summer onslaught, you can enjoy a more authentic insight into the way of life here.

It’s not just the weather that makes it an attractive family destination however, for there are many family friendly attractions to choose from up and down the coast. Bear in mind that some attractions will be closed over the winter period, but there is still a great variety of attractions that remain open to keep you all entertained such as Zoo Lagos, Krazy World and Almancil Karting. A choice of water sports such as surfing and kayaking are also fun to enjoy year round.

Lapland, Finland

When it comes to the ultimate family holiday destination, nowhere can surpass Lapland for a winter break at Christmas! Lapland may seem like a distant far off land is but it’s probably closer than you think as Finland is no more than a 3 hour flight from the UK.

The destination is geared more towards younger children of course with the opportunity to meet Santa Claus himself; an unbeatable Christmas experience! That said, the whole family would have to have a heart of stone not to get caught up in the happy and excited atmosphere.

Located in the Wild North of Finland, there’s no denying that it will be very dark and cold but it’s perhaps a holiday to consider at least once! Combine your holiday with fun and varied winter sports such as snow shoeing, a husky dog safari or a reindeer sleigh ride! A trip here may deliver an extra treat too in the form of the Northern Lights, a phenomenon that is on many people’s wish lists!

If you are considering a family holiday this winter, why not enjoy a break in any of these destinations for a Christmassy trip filled with winter fun for all ages.

Which would you choose? Or do you have another idea? Get the conversation started 🙂
