Autumn is many people’s favourite season. A very stiff drop in temperatures is soothed by one of Mother Nature’s most spectacular performances; the changing of the leaves when the landscape becomes awash with vibrant colours. There is arguably no better time to take to the tarmac and head off for a road trip and the USA is a famed destination for such adventures. Here are 4 autumn road trips to see the changing of the leaves…

Autumn Drive

Midland Trail, West Virginia

Known as the National Scenic Byway, you can rest assured that the Midland Trail which winds its way for 117 miles through some of the most stunning vistas of West Virginia is pretty spectacular. With the honey hues of autumnal trees to accompany you, this drive is one to be enjoyed at a slow pace. Starting on relatively even ground, the road gradual rises to follow the contours of the mountains providing one picture perfect snap shot view after the next. Start your journey in Charleston and head in the direction of Maldon. On the way, stop in at New River Gorge and Hawks Nest State Park. Once you reach the end of the line, explore colonial Lewisburg and test your skills on some of the oldest golf courses in America.

Lake Superior Circle Tour, Michigan

A mammoth 1,200 miles long, the Lake Superior Circle Tour is no mean feat and is not a trip that can be completed quickly. Travelling through the upper peninsula of Michigan into Wisconsin, then Minnesota and finally Ontario, you will be able explore several states and even a slice of Canada in one go, Fall Foliage with the stunning fall colours and amazing panoramas always in view. With no shortage of attractions and outdoors activities to accompany your journey, this will be an unforgettable road trip.

Route 82, Colorado

The entire state of Colorado is incredibly beautiful and a true dream for drivers. Forming a short cut between the famous mountain town of Aspen and Leadville, the road takes you over Independence Pass, close to the crest of Colorado’s highest mountain; Mount Elbert which summits at a staggering 14,443ft high. The elevation of the pass itself sits at 12,095ft making it the fourth highest paved road in the state and as such, the views are unimaginable. Be sure to stop at the Continental Divide crossing to fully appreciate the endless views of the alpine forest below and surrounding peaks. Everywhere you look during the drive will display the characteristic golden hues of fall in Colorado making your journey all the more special.

Mountain Road

Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway winds its way through the stunning mountains of the same name in North Carolina and is considered one of America’s very best scenic drives, offering stunning scenery at every turn. Encircling Grandfather Mountain, one of the oldest in the country, the route boasts vistas of all shades of fiery red, burnet orange and golden yellow which truly sing during the fall. Take the drive from south to north and experience the gradual incline and numerous tunnels. Consider a stop at the Pisgah Inn, which is open from April through until October, for a spot of lunch and enjoy the views from the 5,000ft elevation.

Autumn is a beautiful time for road trips and this is a pick that won’t disappoint, with a medley of bright and warming colours. If you are planning a road trip in America during a different season however, take a look at some of these suggestions for a bit of inspiration.
